Hi

My leo has a gum infection and wondered how it gets treated? Obviously its a vets visit but I was wondering what they prescribe?

Thanks

mouth rot is something that can happen in reptiles. i have never seen it in leos but i am sure it can happen. as far as treatment is concerned i am not sure. i would think antibiotics and possibly something to cleanse the gums but i do not know. best thing is a vet for sure.

Leos dont get mouth rot from what ive been told by vets...however he did also tell me that infections of the gum are very rare in leos compared to other reps - which is good...

i wish it was pigment but the lip is puffy and the gum looks very sore

I will know tomorrow at the vets exactly what it is...i'll send a pic for interest too x

hat did he say it might be? What might he prescribe. You need to be careful with giving leos medicine. Only take his advice if you 100% trust him. Otherwise, read up on the web about what he gave you before you administer it.

actually Leos do get Mouth Rot although it is somewhat rare. They will prescribe an antibiotic and most likely a small pain killer to allow him to eat without pain. It may not be mouth rot it could be abrasions from eating or tearing on to something and ripping away. I've had one get sores from mating with a feisty female who like to run away. After a few treatments he was fine.

Leopard geckos do get mouth rot, but it usually looks like white and cheesy, and can have a foul odor. A veterinary evaluation should be made, perhaps a culture of the saliva to check for possible bacterial infection.

You can take a Q-tip and dip it in 2% hydrogen peroxide and then put a few drops of iodine on the wet swab, and gently rub it over the gums. Let it foam up in the mouth, and then using water on the other end of the Q-tip rinse the mouth out. This won't cure an infection, but it can have antiseptic benefits.

It isnt mouth rot if they're ''sores'', in fact they're small absesses...any of which can get incredibly sore and infected which would need antibiotics (usually a 3 week treatment) immediately.
