Just wanted to find out from everybody here on how they handle their fiesty/biters geckos? For wieghing them and medication, etc. Do you use gloves?

I never use gloves unless its to clean cages. I just hold them behind their head pretty much like a snake. When I get a new gecko, I wait about a week to 10 days before I try to hold them so they get settled into their new home and don't stress as much.

I pick them up and just let them bite me. They figure it out pretty quick that it doesn't hurt, and it does no good. Then I hold them on my chest with my hands cupped around them like a cave, and talk to them in a soothing voice. It only takes a couple of days for them to calm down if this is done regularly.

Jon, you must have a leadership problem with your geckos, LOL!!! In almost 13 years, I have only been bitten about 4-5 times where it drew blood. Besides, I am the MOGL and they are the widdle, bitty, geckos.

I know that some geckos wont tolerate this, but when I handle my geckos I always offer them some waxies in my hand. Our male will eat them right out of my hand, even though he's pretty skittish. He's bit me plenty of times (sometimes on accident), but it never hurts.

I just watch the one that's really fiesty. When I pick him up I watch his body language and stuff. He bit me once and drew blood badly. I have a feeling if he lays into me again, there will be more blood. I know I scared him when he bit me, but I am still alittle shy of picking him up still. He is a strange character. He can be calm, and then flip out for a minute, and then calm again....( he's a BB). Heard they are fiestier than normal. So I am just gentle with him and watch him closely. He does seem happier now that he's got a lady in with him. ;)

Glad to hear someone else talks to their geckos. My wife thinks I'm crazy when I feed them and talk to them. But they have calmed down and most will climb on me when I go into their tubs.

thanks for the advice Marcia, i stuck my hand in and got bit several times, but didnt flinch, and then the gecko finally went submissive.

Exactly! Now, did you put the gecko on your chest and cup your hands around it like a cave and talk to it? (free advise from the 'gecko whisperer'... it really works!)

LOL....Marcia, you make me giggle!

I usually just let mine bite me, also. I've had blood drawn a couple of times, but it still really didn't hurt very badly. They usually figure out quickly that their scary geckoness is no match for the giant with the thumbs! :main_yes:

i only have one, but he's a pretty calm little dude most of the time. i usually just put my hand on the floor of his tank let him climb up then lift him out and sit down at the computer and let him crawl around. everything's good until he gets into his "i'm going to climb down your leg or behind your back" mode, then i know it's time for him to go back to Leo-land.

the other thing i've noticed that i was trying to figure out where to post without starting a new thread:

i think he's getting pretty comfortable in his surroundings, at night he'll come out and snooze right in the open instead of staying in his hide, which i think is pretty sweet.
