Handling your Leo

As you get accustomed to your geckos behaviours i think you'll know when they want to come out.. But as others have already said, patience is key and you're off of a great start.

When my gecko stares up at me, comes out of his cave and is explorative mode peeking his head around every where (usually when I'm feeding the other gecko) I know for sure when I put my hand down he will climb on.. But when he's just laying outside chilling, in sleep pose or with only his head sticking out of the hide, I will lay my hand down only to face rejection every time, either with a blank stare at my hand, or a walk back into his hide in a "thanks for disturbing me" manner. lol!

Haha yeah thats kind of how Teak is. I don't bother him when he is in his hide sleeping...but when he is out and about I'll put my hand out to see if he will climb on. Sometimes he does, and sometimes he turns me down :( but its all good, as long as he is happy, I'm happy!

Yup I never bother or lift up his hide to uncover him while he's sleeping. Even sometimes when he's sprawled out in the wide open relaxing he won't walk on my hand. I have to wait for that curious look he gets his eyes and completely points his head straight upwards to look at me. That's his way of saying "take me out!"

Today I was soaking my rescue leo, he had a little shed stuck on his toe. There were several escape attempts.... he was never handled by the previous owner and I am taking it slow with him but I had to get that shed off. I like them to be a little tame so if they need to visit the vet or for soaks and cage cleanings they can at least be handled. He has done pretty well and I think he will end up being pretty friendly. My other 2 are like night and day, Venus is pretty easy to handle but makes a loud protest about it and would prefer to be left alone, and Loki is VERY tame, he will just lay on you and has even caught a little nap here and there. Their personalities are so different.

Haha thats cute! Yeah Teak is pretty tame once he warms up to us holding him but the previous owner said he didn't handle him much lately because they were moving...which can either of been a week or a few months of not handling him. He sits pretty well with me on the couch on my arm or curled up in my hand. I would like him to be able to crawl into my hand when I put it in his cage, but that might take more patience since he is still very new to us. I just want to be able to hold him, making it easy to clean his cage and what not.

mine let me hold them for hours but only hold them 20-30 minutes

Thats cool! I hope he eventually gets used to us more. We have literally only had him a week so I know it will take time and patience with him. But he is doing good eating and pooping and he loves his moist hide and is almost always in there if he isn't hunting down his food!
