ok i have my gecko and she is use to me and i need to know how to pick her up with out hurting her. im afraid that if i grab her wrong (but not by the tail) that it will stress her out and she will drop her tail.she isnt full grown, she is only around 5.5-6 inches long.any help would be greatly appreciated.
i have the same concern, so i put my hand in and offer it, if she doesnt get on, then i dont try to pick her up but ive seen a lot of people just reach in and grab them without hurting them.
If you want to just pick them up, I find the best way is to gently grab them by the middle, well maybe I should reword it lol,not really grab them.. Just gently scoop them up. Never grab them by the tail..
I put one hand in front of the gecko on the bottom of the tank so they see it is there then slowly move my other hand and touch them to get them to walk on my hand or just pick them up behind their front legs.
I'll allow my geckos to know that it is me by putting my hand in their and allowing them to smell my fingers before I'll very gently touch their side, then pick them up under their stomach, staying clear from their tails. The normal who was very skittish at first, is now proving to be the tamest of the two.
most young geckos are very skiddish. i still have 1 that is about 4 months that hates being held. he squirms out of my hands and im scared to grip him tight fearful he may catch his tail on the way out of my hand. i think as stated above just let them get familiar with your hand and let them lick it. usually when i pick mine up i put my thumb and forefinger just behind their front limbs, then place them on my other hand. i just hand walk them as they try to get off until they calm down. usually works for me and then they get used to being held, some of them i have even enjoy a good petting lol.
