Hatchling Hematoma?

I thought I remembered someone explaining what this is that some hatchlings hatch out with, but I couldn't find where I read it. This guy hatched with a red, swollen foot but it doesn't appear to be affecting his mobility. I doubt it's an injury, and I know the clutchmate didn't do it because he hasn't hatched yet. Any thoughts?

(sorry, this is the best I can do for pictures)

perhaps a broken blood vessel from either being cramped in the egg or while emerging from the egg?

it also looks like the two toes are slightly disfigured

Yeah, I think the toes look kind of short but I thought that might be due to the swelling.

This little one hatched with what looked like maybe a broken blood vessel? It had one on its tummy as well. They've completely disappeared now and she's doing well.

Perhaps the same thing happened to your little one - just a longer time before hatching? Or maybe a blood vessel broke and it's foot was too cramped in the egg? Hopefully it will clear up quickly. I think the toes just look swollen.

Thanks, Felicia :)

I just checked on "him" and he's about to shed. The redness & swelling have gone down, but one toe is looking dark. I have a feeling he might lose it. :(

For those of you whom have had something similar happen with hatchlings, would I be accurate in assuming that fears of this being genetic are unsubstantiated?

Wow. He has got to be one of the hardest hatchlings to photograph. He just won't stop walking! I've noticed that with Bells though. Anyhow, here are two pictures I took this afternoon. The toes aren't as dark as they were last night.

That looks better - maybe it will resolve itself! :)

I don't think it would be genetic. If it was something about positioning in the egg, it wouldn't be. And if it is something like Tremper had with that blue spot, he tested that and it was not genetic.
