Hatchling Retaining the Shape of the Egg

So we had an egg hatch about 3 days ago. Its clutchmate had been mooshy (mushy?) since the beginning and collapsed last night. Expecting another egg to hatch, we were excited -- okay let's face facts -- we were so anxious we couldn't eat, sleep, or watch TV (okay that's a little overboard, but you get the idea!).

So we decided to snip the egg to see if the fluid was clear or not however we were a little over zealous. Thusly, the hatchling sort-of flopped out of the egg, however still retained in the inner membrane. So, pictures ensued.

During all of the excitement, only one was worth while... Yeah, yeah, give me a break.

GET THE INNER MEMBRANE OFF. If the membrane is still on his lungs cant breath and he will die. Im guessing its too late, but if you can get that off very carefully he should be ok.

GET THE INNER MEMBRANE OFF!!!
Exactly. You can do this by very gently pinching the membrane near the head and tugging on it so it will split, and this will allow the hatchling to be able to breathe. If it has been awhile already, it may be dead... Good luck.

We took the membrane off after snapping the pictures. The pictures took less time than the quality actually shows. That's why I was impressed, as we were rushing around, that a picture did so well. As we speak, the little girl is running around being a normal hatchling.

Yes, I was thrilled that it was okay. The only reason that we snipped the egg was because it looked infertile since the beginning. I don't recommend doing it, but I hadn't even imagined that there would be a baby within the egg.

Josh, did you ever candle the egg? What made you think it was infertile?

Yes we candled the egg but there was so much peatmoss on the egg that we couldn't see through it. It was soft all through the incubation process and collapsed drastically 24 hours before we agreed to snip it.... The purpose for the first post was to share a unique picture, not start a Great Inquisition. :)

The hatchling is okay, calm down...

No I didn't mean for you to take it like that. I was just wondering because I have eggs that I think are infertile and I was just wondering if yours showed the same signs as mine. I'm glad the hatchling is ok.

I notice my eggs with peat moss are softer, and arent hard like the eggs in vermiculite. Very awesome pic tho!

Edit: My soft ones were laid in peat moss, incubated in perlite. The hard ones leid in vermic, incubated in perlite. Any1 else notice this?
