That's when you use a Tupperware container and only cut a hole in the lid. That way he has to go in from the top, no more mess that way. Are you sure it's a he?

Perfectly normal. And sex doesn't have anything to do with it, I have plenty of males who are quite happy to dig all the substrate out of the moist hide. A hole in the top as mentioned should keep mess to a minimum(only big enough for the gecko to fit through), but some geckos are really determined to make a mess. With males who do this, I simply use moist paper towels in the humid hide.

Only reason I asked if it's a he is if it's a female don't they do that when they are nesting the lay box to lay the eggs?
If he makes a mess like said above use a wet paper towel. I know about males making a mess lol my old raptor would destroy his whole tank if I didn't take him out when he wanted..

The only reason why I honestly use the spaghnum moss is it's easier on the eyes then the paper towel is.
