Heat Rock to hot?

I know a few of you are gonna freak when you hear heat rock...

It's a homemade thing I did. I took some 1 1/2 inch thick slate,
and a Zoo Med 8 watt heat matt, stuck the heat mate to the
shinny slippery side of the slate, flipped it over (so the rough side
is where the gecko sits), and it's ground temp (measured with a
Zoo Med digital thermometer) is holy smokin 97.1 F!

Is that a safe temp for Carrot (leopard gecko) to be laying on,
or will that burn her like original heat rocks (the horrible ones)?

That's a little to high but I dont think it will burn your Leo. Try maybe putting down some paper towel or repticarpet to get the temps down to 93-95 at the most

It is a little high. Follow the suggestion above with the paper towels or repti carpet on top to cool it down a little.
The problem with heat rocks wasn't their temperature, it was the fact that a LOT of them would short out and get extremely hot and cause some serious burns, or even fires. Most people will put a rheostat or dimmer on their heat mats to make sure the temperature is controlled.

Reptiles dont feel localized temperatures like we do. She cant put her little hand it first and think "oh this is going to burn me". She'll just lay on it trying to get her body temps up, and burn her underside.
