Heat too high

Hi, the heat in my leopard gecko tank is way too high, it started at 98, and when I checked an hour ago it was at 106. I unplugged it and now they're at 80. How do I fix the heat problem?

Ok. How long will they last at 80*? Today they were vigorously trying to climb out of the tank. :/ I have to go to school, so I put a piece of styrofoam over it to try to keep some heat in.

I don't know what your substrate is, but consider maybe piling a few layers of tile or something over the hot side and then keeping the UTH on. With enough layers, it may not get that hot. Another solution for now is to go to a Home Depot type store and spend $12 on a rheostat which you can use to turn the UTH heat output down.

My substrate's newspaper with slate in the corners. Yeah, I tried putting a second layer of slate over the hot part, but it was still at 100. It was at 106 with just one layer of slate(I just cleaned the tank and didn't put the second layer). I'll try putting a slate layers again, and if that doesn't work I'll get the rheostat.

I used duct tape to attach the UTH to the tank, could that be why it's overheating?

100 is tolerable for leos.they will take what heat they need
