I today went and bought a heat light at my local pet store which I really didnt want a heat light I just wanted a night time viewing light but of course they did not have just that. So what I want to know is should I leave my heat mat on or should I turn it off when I turn on the lamp. I got the lowest watt they had which was 50.

I recently switched to compact fluorescent bulbs on a timer to turn them off when I go to bed. They're cheaper than any reptile bulbs you'd find at the pet store, and put out virtually no heat.

I have a whole drawer full of those bulbs (red, moonlight, etc. 50 and up watts) that I no longer use because they are all a "possible heat problem" unless you have a very Tall tank. Be careful if using it especially if on a 12 " tall tank. I never suggest turning off the belly heat.
I went to the somewhat newer gas bulb of 13 watts....nice viewing light with low heat.........(But now) ** L.E.D. clip on spot light recently found at the dollar store is very nice for a buck....no wires, no heat, no cost other than the buck. Came with batteries and bulb complete...Gonna put a couple turned on, on each of my tanks in the evening while I'm up....See thread " SEE a GECKO for a BUCK"
take care. HJ

Walmart sells cheap party lights. They come in a variety of colors too! I don't know the heat output, but they aren't really heat lamps, so it can't be too much...

There have been reported eye problems with Bearded Dragons using the UV compact lights with regard to blindness and eye swelling

Now those are Diurnal lizards that are sun baskers

I understand that the light that you are using is not a UV bulb but the compact bulbs are incredibly bright and I can't imagine using them on a nocturnals tank

No offense meant-I am just concerned for your Leos vision-esp. if you have albinos

Daniel-bring the infrared bulb back and get the cheap party bulb
You don't need to leave it on all night-just when you want to watch your Leos at night
Leave the uth on all of the time

just my .-02

What about halogen red 25W bulbs?
I have a new Zilla hood (30'' w/ 3 bulbs) and have never used halogen for my herps before. One 25W bulb at one end gets my 20gal tank 80F on that side. I also have the heat only lamps, but wont be able to see my leo with that. Can leo's only see long wave or short? Oh, I have a UTH at the other end. So I only need 1 halogen bulb.

I assumed it was safe since the big chain pet stores sell expensive compact fluorescent light bulbs with UVB. Please send me a link to any website you know of reporting this claim.

I had went to another pet store and bought a night glo seeing as they put off less heat I thought I would try it to see how it works. Well I can tell you all now I have used the night glo from exo terra for a few days now. I noticed he wasnt coming out at all so last night I decided to turn it off and wait to see if he came out. So I waited about 15 minutes and dimmed on my light and sure enough he was outside. So idk if anyone else has used the night glos but they do no wor for my gecko. I have a read heat bulb that I am going to try next to see if he is bothered by that as well. If that does work and he doesnt mind it I may just go get a red party bulb then. My gecko is an albino by the way.
