Heating Problem

I have a 24x15x15 wooden vivarium with a heat mat inside and a thermostat that is set to 95F.

I have 3 hides, the small Exo-Terra one, a tupperware tub with moss in for moist hide (placed about in the middle of the viv) and a piece of cork bark stuff on the warm side that my little guy loves.

I have paper towel substrate, 2 layers thick.

My gecko is now eating every day and pooping every few days so i know his insides are working ;)

The problem im having is the air temperature seems to be too low. I have a pair of dial thermometers atm (getting digital next pay day) and theyre reading about 72.

Also if i put a thermometer on the floor near my thermostat probe sometimes it reads 90-95 and other times it reads almost 100. But the floor doesnt feel as hot as the thermometer. Its like the plastic is retaining the heat more than the actual floor so then i start worrying its too hot and turn the thermostat down, only for me to check it later and think its not hot enough.

I have a 60w clear spotbulb too on the warm side that can heat the air to about 90 warm side, almost 80 cool side, but then my heat mat seems to turn off because of the probe being warmed by the bulb.

I was considering getting a 40w red bulb to try and heat the air a little but am still unsure of how to place my probe so it doesnt get heated by the bulb. Its not very easy to put the probe under a piece of wood without it getting in his way, getting caught on the wood or just not being able to place it flat enough to get a proper reading.

I tried putting his other hide onto the warm side and he just walked in and out a few times then seemed a little miffed at me :main_laugh:

I also worry hes not hot enough because he doesnt come out of his warm hide much, even during the night.

I had the front glass covered with a towel for about a week and he came out a bit more then (sometimes i would uncover him to see what he was doing and he was just resting in a corner near the glass) but he went really pale and im still not sure if he shed as hes brightened up now but i found no evidence of any shed.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated :)

I don't really worry about the air temp either in summer or winter. My house is heated in winter, but we turn the heat down to 60 at night. I have no air conditioning in the summer and it gets quite hot and humid in New England. I figure that in the winter, if the air temp is too hot for them, they'll spread themselves out on the warm side. Some of the heaters do seem to have hot spots where it gets up really high. As long as no one is getting burns I think it's OK.
