My name is Jake and I've been bitten by the reptile bug again. I've kept Leos and bred cresteds when they first were around but ended up getting out of the reptile world and into saltwater reef tanks. After having had a reef tank for 6+ years its broken down now and I've been without a tank for about 6 months now and I'm thinking about getting back into it with some Leos. I have a 3 year old son that would love something he can actually hold (kinda hard to pet fish and coral). This is basically my pet but I think my son would it as well kind of a father son thing. I've been reading up on this site and it seems a few things have changed, mealworms used to be a treat not a staple diet. Anyways just wanted to say hi and hopefully meet some good people. I live in Chicago so if you are from the area hit me up. Also if you have any tips I'm all ears. Cheers.

Welcome to GF! Are you sure mealworms were the treat and not waxworms? I hope you enjoy your return to geckos. I'm on the east coast, but my twins are waiting to hear from Northwestern among other places (no, they do NOT want to be at the same school next year) so some trips to Chicago may be in my future.

Thanks for the welcome. It was mealworms as I still see some posts on here about feeding them and worries about their exoskeleton being hard to digest which from what I've read so far is just a myth. I plan on going gut loaded mealworms as I'm in a condo and a tank full of crickets wouldn't go over well with the wife. LOL. If u don't mind me asking what do you feed. Thanks and ill take all the info I can get from ya!

Cheers!

I feed hatchlings and juvies mealworms for 2 reasons: it's easier for them to "catch" the mealworms and the small crickets would just migrate around the partitioned enclosures I keep them in. Also I often sell geckos to kids whose parents are going to be doing the care and who don't want to deal with crickets. My adults are all eating crickets and superworms. They get bored with mealworms after awhile. I just got a bunch of silkworms from a reptile show today and most of them are happily chowing down on those. I don't feed roaches since this is the step my otherwise very tolerant family (23 cages in the living area) can't take.
