Hello all,

I joined the forum to learn about all types of geckos, but mainly those from the genus Rhacodactylus. My wife and I have just one crested Gecko. He was a rescue and wasn't taken care of very well as a hatchling. He's three years old and half the size of normal Cresties, but he is healthy now and happy.

My wife and I have been considering setting up an enclosure for breeding a trio of Crested Geckos and a pair of Gargoyle geckos.

I have experience with corn snakes and ball pythons and their genetics are fairly straight forward, however I understand that Rhacodactylus are polymorphic and inherit their phenotype differently.

Is there any information within the forum or can anyone offer an explanation of their phenotypical inheritance?

For example, if I mate together a harlequin and a pinstripe, will the offspring be half harlequin and half pin or will they be a combination of both? Not sure how this works with cresties.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. As you may know already, crested geckos are no longer Rhacodactylus but are now in the Correlophus genus. I don't breed cresties and can't really speak to their genetics, but a great book to get about gargs is "Gargoyle Geckos" by P. deVosjoli et.al.

Hello and welcome to GeckoTalk!
Kudos to you and your wife on the adoption!
I'm not positive how the phenotype inheritance works with cresties but maybe one of our resident crestie breeders can chime in...

welcome, nice to have new members.when I bred cresties, it was pretty much a crapshoot,as far as genetics go. I had a Dalmatian pair produce harlequins, harlequins produce almost pinstripes, etc. I got out of breeding cresties and leopards for the same reason- the lizards were simply too prolific, and I'd have a bunch of hatchlings to feed/house/etc,until I found them homes. my gargoyles aren't as prolific, each female laying every 6 wks or so. I've usually got a waiting list for hatchlings, provided that I don't hold them back for future projects.

I've often heard that issue with cresties before. In fact, that's probably the #1 thing that has kept me from pairing mine up. It's the responsible thing to do in the end.
