Bill, it's part of the responsibilities that come along with pet ownership. It is important for people to have pets but it's not fair to the pet if the owner cannot provide necessary health care.

MorganaMoonstone, I'm so sorry you had to go through this, losing an animal that way is heartbreaking. Maybe you could speak to the vet about doing a necropsy to find out what happened. Perhaps there's something everyone can learn from this tragic loss.

im sure if she couldn't afford a vet visit she wont be able to afford a necropsy, not trying to get into anything im just saying. I am very sorry for your loss, I can't imagine what you are going through.

thats why people come to places like here is to get advice... theres alot of things you can do yourself that will save your pets life... and you alot of cash... vet bills are rediculious... i mean we had our parakeet break a blood feather... called a vet, they said 80 bucks just to LOOK at it... not to do anything, just to see it, 80 DOLLARS! so insted we went online and did some searching and found out we can do it our selves... bird lived and all were happy... cept for that vet that didnt get my 100 bucks... does that mean im anti-vet? nope... i now have a 600 dollar cat cuz of a vet... but point being is my lil girl still has her kitty... would i pay 100+ for a 10 dollar bird... not very likely... i have found in general people come here because they cant afford a vet bill just to tell them there pet is dying... i understand thats hard for some people to understand that NOT EVERY pet owner can afford a SUDDEN vet bill... they are not cheap and in a failing economy... i know its everywheres around us... its the way of the world right now... i know if our car broke down right now, we couldnt afford 100+ bill to fix it... does it mean we shouldnt own a car? *shrug* we are not all rich, or rich enough... alot of us live week to week, day by day... we take great care of our pets, they have everything they need... but im sorry... if something comes up, im coming here, asking what can i do at home... browse online... its a great tool when used right... i know some cases should just be hands down a vet... this being one of them... but to pretty much say if you cant afford a rediculious vet bill then you shouldnt have pets is just wrong IN MY OPINION... but oh well... i know yall will dissagree... so ill let this just go... ive babbled enough... hopefully my opinions didnt step on any toes... its just MY OPINION... wich everyone loves to hear different opinions right? well thats mine... sorry for semi hijacking this post... im done... ive vented... thats my opinion...

sorry your gecko passed... :(

Bill, no one said "if you can't afford a ridiculous vet bill then you shouldn't have pets", all Marcia and the others were getting at is the fact that when you bring an animal into your home you are then responsible for that animal's well being. They are like a child in that way...if they are sick, you do what you can to help them feel better, etc. I am not condoning the $200 exotic vet bills by any means, I just am a firm believer that if you choose to have pets, you are therefore responsible for them...monetarily as well as physically. Granted, some people cannot afford the $3000 surgery that Sparky needs, but there are always options. A lot of vets will take payments. Our puppy shattered the tendon in his rear hock at 3 months old. We did not have the $2,000 vet bill, but were able to pay $100 increments for a few months, then pay it off entirely when we could.

And comparing a car to a living, breathing animal doesn't make any sense. If your car breaks down it doesn't feel pain, or suffer, therefore fixing it is for your own gain, not to make the car feel better. If an animal gets sick it is a whole different story.

I am very very sorry for the loss of this gecko, and even IF she could have been able to get it to a vet it seems the poor little thing had too many complications.

Wow guys. here's the deal. I don't want to spark a debate. I understand both sides. I do have the funds. However, my paycheck has not come in at the moment. I've also had to pay a ticket as well. This was completely unexpected. she just started showing symptoms yesterday. Ok. So i don't have an emergency fund as of now because of costs. I usually could afford this, even ask my parents for help. They refuse, because they are zoo keepers and see death all the time. they told me there was nothing that could be done, and in the end there wasn't.

I'm not poor, but i am low on funds. that does not mean i should give away my animal. by that logic, i'd get rid of my car because i don't have emergency cash for when it breaks down. Ok, living creature is obviously different, but i know what happened, and there is nothing i could have done for her. I would have spent $80 to hear it from a professional.

I will miss my gecko, and I loved her dearly. Please do not use my post about a family member dying as a place to debate/rant. I understand the frustration, but I don't need any more opinions about my lack of funds at the moment. Thank you.

I'm so sorry about her death. I know the way you feel the same thing happened to me. Once they're that sick they it only days or a matter of hours. Don't beat yourself up about it there was probably nothing you could have done from one day to another even if you could have seen a vet.
