I think my poor beau may be sick. :( He threw up the other day and now he won't eat, how do I know if he's dehydrated? I'm going on vacation this weekend and I'm so scared to leave him. But i don't want to stress him by taking him with.

Am i just worying too much? I'll be gone Sat-Sun

Thanks!

Sometimes geckos throw up because they eat too much. They learn quickly not to do that. How old is Beau and how long have you had him? Chances are that if you're gone for 2 days, he'll be fine. Just leave him some extra food and water.

Yea I know, but I didn't feed him anything out of the ordinary... he ate his normal amount. Maybe he got a bad mealie?

I was told he's 3yo. I've only had him about a month now.

I tried to drop some water on his nose but he wouldn't drink it. Maybe he's hydrated, I don't know how to tell. He doesn't eat his mealies out of his food dish anymore. He likes to chase them.

If he's 3 years old he doesn't need to eat every day anyway. He'll drink when he gets thirsty. It's hard not to worry about them but they're pretty hardy.

Turns out he's shedding :D... he doesn't like to eat much when he's shedding, so I guess I was over reacting... freaked me out when he threw up. So hopefully he'll be just fine :)

Thanks again :)

Ok... it's been a week now of him not eating. How long can they go without eating :( He has no intrest in the mealies at all. I hope he's ok :main_no: He's not acting like himself... He's a big food lover!

Are they like us where they don't want to eat the mealies if they vomit from them? :main_huh:

They can go for a long time without food, starvation is not an immediate concern. Can you go over the details of his setup? Temperatures, substrate, cage size, feeding routine, etc?

Sure

He has reptile carpet atm, he has vermulite in his moist hide.
He has three hides, one on the cool side, one in the middle, and his moist hide on the warm side.
The warm side is about in the 90s and the cool side is about room temp. (I have a light and a UTH)

Then I have his mealies in a dish (which he never takes, but they're there if he wants them), and his water dish right beside that. And then a little lid with calcium.

His cage is 30x12x12.5

Normally I feed him 8-10 mealies every other day... or I'll do 5 mealies a day. He's usually a big eater. I hate seeing him like this  I tried to give him a mealie last night he just looked at it... that's how he acted when he first came home, because he was stressed. But there's nothing different that could be stressing him out. I even stopped holding him to see if that mattered.

Hope that helped! Everything I've checked over 10x... and read everything I need to read, I believe I have a good setup. He did go to the bathroom last night, he hasn't gone for a couple of days. It was only a little bit, but I assume that's because he has nothing in his stomach.

Have you tried any other feeders. You could try roaches or superworms or maybe crickets. Have you moved his cage recently or anything different. I know this may sound silly but I have a few little wierdos who prefer one part of my house to others. My first gecko stopped eating after I put her in my reptile room. She hadn't eaten for a month or so and I decided to try to move her back to the same place I had her. She ate 5 roaches the day I moved her back. I also had one that stopped eating and couldn;t figure out why so I changed her to a bigger cage in a different place and now she is eating like a champ. Just a few ideas even if they do sound a little crazy.

This part concerns me. Do you have an accurate method of measuring temps like an IR temp gun and/or digital probe thermometer? The stick on anaolog dial thermometers and liquid crystal strips are notorious for being inaccurate and should not be relied on.

Nope... I haven't moved his cage or anything. I haven't given him any other feeders yet. I'll be running to the store tomorrow to grab some new mealies for him and throw the others away if that helps. I'm thinking mabe he got a bad mealie, I know Kirby got a bad one and wouldn't eat supers for awhile. I'm going to grab some supers for my beardie and pick up some extras for him... Maybe I'll pick up some crickets while I'm there for him.

Tony, Yes I have accrate method of measuring temps. I bought the digital probe thermometers. (ACURITE brand to be exact, I told it was a good one when I read up on the forums) I check the temps every few days to make sure they're accurate (The temp in the house doesn't change much) I'll measure them again to make sure they're accurate, I just thought about that today. (His lights are off right now).

I know how those strips and dials aren't accurate... I don't even get why they sell them:main_no:

Thanks again guys, he's been coming out more often so maybe he'll eat tomorrow, before he was just chilling in his hide -he does that when he sheds. He could've just been having a bad shed...I hope.

I would bring the temps up 5-8 degrees on the warm side.

I would...but he won't sleep in it if it gets any hotter then that.

He ate! I just got back from the store and picked up some new mealies! He's his normal self again. Looks like it's nothing :main_laugh:
Thanks!!!!!!!!
