[Help!] She hides under the paper towel ALL the time...

HEY ALL! Long time no talk! December has been a crazy super-busy month for us and we had to take an "online break" for a while. We're still swamped with events, but we're doing the best we can to relax!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

INFO
We need some help with one of our girls. We have 3 girls, all were quarantined for about 55-60 days before being introduced into a 4-foot long enclosure. All were monitored for signs of bullying, stress, and eating habits - and so far, so good!

HUSBANDRY
We have 3 humid hides, 3 cool hides, 2 warm hides, and 3 randomly placed U-shaped logs for them to hide in. The substrate is currently paper towels. They are currently eating mealworms every other day, crickets several times a month, and wax worms once every two weeks. Mealworms are gutloaded with Cody's ProGutload and carrots and the crickets are gutloaded with Cody's ProGutload and Fluker's Cricket Quencher Water Gel. Spot temp on the warm side is 88-90F, spot temp on the cool side is 78F, and ambient air temp is approximately 86F warm side and 76F cool side (it's a really, really long and large tank, but we keep hides everywhere so they can regulate their temps. Lights go on at 7AM and they go off at 7PM. They shed fine, tails are great, they're very alert, and I'm happy with them!

MY PROBLEM
Two weeks ago, one of my baby girls, Sunkiss, found a way to get under the paper towel substrate. It was cute at first because she'd poke her head out and look like she was under a blanket. But after trying to close off every way to get under the paper towel using hides, logs, bowls, and dishes, she just starts scratching at the edges and then forces her way under. She stays there until right before Leon or I head to bed - and that's when we catch her eating or we hand feed her so we know she's really getting some food in. Once in a while, she'll be out on the warm end sleeping over the heat mat, but 90% of the time, she's under the paper towel. I separated her for a week, but she did the same thing in the other enclosure. Her tail is fine, she walks around and is fairly active when she's not under the paper towel, she's shedding great, her colors are brighter than ever, but I don't know what to do about her going under the paper towel.

Should I tape off the paper towels (I haven't yet because I don't want their toes to get caught under and stuck! Ouchies!)? Or should I switch substrates? And if I switch substrates, will she be more stressed out that she can't hide under the paper towels?

I've never had this type of experiences with any of my previous reptiles, so I'm seeking assistance!

Thank you!

I have a Bliz female that does the same thing. I never really thought about it. It doesn't seem to have any adverse effect even being with another female. So I thought if she likes it and it doesn't hurt than alls well that is well.

I would think that it would be ok as long as she is going to the heat when she needs to and she is coming out to eat. I personally have tile so I haven't had this problem. We started out with repti-carpet and my geckos kept getting their teeth hung it when they went after the crickets that got out of the dishes. It didn't seem to bother anyone when I swithched substrates.

I would recommend increasing the temperature on the ground to 90-94 degrees on the warm side. I had a female that was doing that, then I increased the temp to 92, and now she doesn't do that anymore!

sooo... try that, and let me know if it help! :)

Alot of leo's like to hide were somthing is close to thier back, and in this case your gecko founder her fav spot with the paper towel being the hide with the closet thing on her back. LOL, i have a couple that do that, but i dont think it has anything to do with the Temps.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I increased the warm side's spot temp to 92F, but she won't budge from her favorite spot on the mid/cool side of the tank. I lifted up the paper towel to try and move her to the warm side last night, and she looked up at me with that goofy smile of hers, licked the air, and tried to go under the fold of the paper towel, so I just re-covered her and watched her from under the tank glass (we have a wooden stand that has an opening on the bottom) and she just looked at me, looked away, and closed her eyes :p Goofy girl.

I guess I won't worry as much since she is eating, her tail's still fat, and she's probably more active while I'm sleeping any way. She seems to be the more "relaxed" compared to the other two girls running around in the tank. I guess I guess I just got worried!! :)

Leon loves seeing the geckos, so we're thinking of switching to a tile substrate. I'm just worried that she might stress out without the paper towels, so I'm off to hunt for a smaller hide since she likes things toucher her back. I did notice that though - that ALL the leos' favorite hides in the terrarium seem to be the smaller and lower-to-the-ground hides. The larger hides are usually empty or they're in it less frequently.

THANKS AGAIN everyone! You've helped calm my nerves :D

One of my females randomly started doing this for a while... then just as sponataneously stopped. Maybe your girl is just going through a "fad" as well. :)

Hehehe it's good to know that she's not the only one! We were just worried about her because we don't see her as often as the other girls.... because she loves staying under that darned paper towel! Hehehe. I'll provide smaller hides and hopefully she'll spontaneously stop hiding under the paper towel as well!

I agree that Leos do like their hides low but I was just wondering what type of lights that you are using and is Sunkiss an albino ?
I am just guessing here -but I am wondering if she has a sensitivity to the light?

That being asked-I also have Leos that do the same thing with the use of no lights on their tanks/tubs

The leo that does this is a SHTCTB. I'm using the basic dome lamp with a higher wattage zoomed bulb... keeps the temps up in the large enclosure and helps with the light regulation since it gets dark earlier now :p

Here's a pic of her.. it was taken in late September - I don't have any recent pics, but I'll have some up in a month when I get a new DSLR! :)

My het AFT does that. I've put slate over the paper towels, she broke through. I put decor there. She broke through again. I gave up. Ha. She should be fine though.

Yep, some of them just seem to prefer a "blanket" instead of an actual hide spot. The ones I have that do that, only get a paper towel as their hide. lol

We had a few leos that kept doing that then we started to spray the paper towels down as we were putting them into the cage to "make them stick" to eachother and the bottom of the cage.

On an off note where do you buy Cody's ProGutload? Thanks
