help with my elderly gecko?

Hi everyone!
I'm new here, I joined because I need some help with my baby Zigfried (aka Ziggy Stardust.)

I adopted him a several years ago, he was around ten years old at the time. I hate to use the word 'abuse,' but let's just say his old owners weren't giving him as much attention as he would have liked. He was my first reptile, and I'm doing my best to keep him as happy and healthy as possible.

Anyways, I have a few questions:
First of all, he's been having quite a bit of difficulty shedding lately. He's always had problems around his toes (they're a little deformed) but it's never been anything a lukewarm soak hasn't fixed. But with his latest shed, he's had skin stuck around his face and tail. I was able to get his tail all fixed up, but I can't exactly soak his face (Q-tips didn't do the trick.) He's really friendly, but he just really doesn't like me poking around his face and I'm afraid of hurting him. Are there any tricks to get the old skin off, and any ways to make his future sheds easier?

He's also been having difficulty eating lately.
A little less than a year ago he became too slow to catch crickets on his own. For a while I pulled their legs off so he could catch them, but eventually I just switched over to mealworms/superworms entirely. That seemed to be working fine until about a month ago, when he stopped eating entirely. I thought it might have something to do with the dead skin around his mouth, but he stopped eating before that. I've read to try waxworms, but I can't find them at any of the local pet stores. Is there anything else I can try?

Thank you all in advance!

I have many geckos that get shed stuck on the face and I just take hold of the end and pull it off. You could also try making him a "sauna" for awhile --a warm, wet plastic container, sort of like a super humid hide so he can steam off his shed or at least soften it.

I also have some geckos who are poor hunters and I hold the crickets in front of them by a leg so they can grab them. Maybe the change in feeders will spark his interest.

Thanks! I'll try the sauna idea tonight. If the skin is softened, I'm hoping he won't mind me picking at it as much.

Whenever we have stuck shed on the head, we would wet a piece of tissue or cotton square then wipe down opposite direction of the shed; then use tweezers to gently pull it off.
