Got her a few hours ago and I love her. She hisses when you pick her up but hasn't tried anything yet. I need to give her a good soak tomorrow night to work on the shed. Can't believe how cute she is!!

Oh how pretty!
Hissy, huh? I was wondering what the welding gloves were for... :p
Just keep working with her. She'll mellow out with time. Then that magnificent monitor personality will emerge and she'll be a total love bug!
Savannahs are really creatures of habit, so get her into a routine and it will help to tame her down. I've also noticed that their temperment seems to get a little more aggressive if you take them outside. So personally, I wouldn't recommend taking outside for a little bit, until she's good and settled. Then start with like small trips out to the porch or front steps.
Oh, and they are eating machines!! Because of this, they are also prone to obesity. They will eat anything. Our big girl charged our full grown cat once. Don't think she'd know what to do with him once she caught him, but by gosh, she was gonna try!:main_rolleyes:

Congratulations!! You're gonna LOVE her!:D

I want to handle her often, but unfortunately this weekend is where I leave the house by 7 am and don't get back until 8 pm. Hopefully Monday I can
do it, I really want to tame her down some. Thanks for the info. I was thinking of getting some ground turkey for her and rolling it into meatballs for her and mixing it with calcium. Is that a good idea?

Usually monitors don't need too much supliments. She looks really good. Hows her overall health?

She will more than likely eat the heck out of turkey. We used to make up a whole bunch of little meat balls and freeze them for our foster girl then thaw them out as needed.

Are you planning on giving her any pinkies?

I was planning on it. He was feeding hoppers. I just need to buy them. He was giving them to her 2 times a week and then dog food the rest of the time. I tried superworms today, but she had no interest. She seems good. The site where the surgery was done healed great and she has no problems moving around. She spent the whole night soaking in the water dish and that seems to have gotten off most of it. She spent a good deal basking today and checking out the tank. I'm actually picking up her new tank tomorrow for when she's full grown. When I upgrade her in week or two, I'm switching from the aspen to jungle bedding and bed a beast. I'll be picking up the hoppers and turkey tomorrow and see if my boyfriend can handle her tomorrow so she can get used to it. My main concern with her would be my 4 yr old daughter who I know is going to want to touch it. She is learning about all the animals here and knows that everything has the potential to bite. I explained that this girl is different because she will be bigger than most of what we have reptile wise and that she is not going to be allowed to touch for quite some time. She knows that the potential for a bad bite can occur and she does not wish for any doctor visits, so I think I'll be ok. But you never know with children's curiousty. ;) I'm getting a herp enclosure ultra lite so she can see Tripod and I don't have to worry about her opening the tank. Thanks for the help.

Since yours is a bit bigger than my baby, let me know how she does on the bed a beast. I put Joanna on it the first few days and it was a nightmare, but I think that had alot to do with her size and she burrows constantly.
If you use dog foods, be sure to get a better quality brand. (The ash and filler content in the el-cheapo stuff is pretty high)
Doesn't surprise me she doesn't care for supers. Alot of monitors don't. Now crickets on the other hand, she'll be all about them!
What kind of surgery did she have?
I think your daughter will do just fine. You did a great job explaining the bite factor and I'm sure you've talked to her about the nature of these animals, so before long she'll know everything there is to know about savannah monitors.
You're going to have your own little Bindi Irwin by the time she starts kindergarten! :D

I did pick up Nutro Max chicken and turkey canned(protien 8%). The surgery she had was to remove her front left leg due to her brother ripping it off during a feeding session. That happened about a year ago. The site healed great. The wife was the one that wanted them and then realized she didn't care for them. My friend did his best to take care of the trio while taking care of his pets as well(he breeds large boas and used to breed pit bulls, his house is a zoo). Now that they are getting divorced, he is trying to find homes for them. The one brother is highly aggressive and he has found a home for him with someone who is experienced with aggressive monitors. Tripod is more show but I keep jumping everytime she hisses(I can deal with an aggressive 10 pound Hogg Island, but this thing makes me leary and I have to get over that.) So that is how she came to me. I am picking up her new cage today and can't wait to set that up. I have a feeling the bed a beast is going to be messy because she does dig. Should be fun to find out.

Joanna dug around and had it in her eyes and mouth... just everywhere! She seemed to be having a great time in it, I was just worried about her eaating it or something, ya know?
I know what you mean about being leary with her hissing. Monitors have strong bites and flail their heads back and forth once they've got you. Gimme a boa or python bite any day!!
Congratulations on coming to her rescue like you did. Sounds like she had a bit of a tough row to hoe to begin with, but between you and your friend, she's got a chance to do wonderfully!
Can't wait to see pictures of her as she grows up!:D

aw! She looks like a fiesty little thing! She's beautiful. A year ago I never thought I would find myself saying a reptile is beautiful...but, here I am. :D

Ain't that the truth!?
Once you get involved with reptiles, you start saying the most unlikely things.

Nope, she was free. He knew how much I liked her, so he figured when he needed to find homes for them, he'd ask me. She was an early birthday present for me(it's on Tuesday). :D
Of course I picked up her new herp enclosure. The only thing is that I have to cut it to put in the basking light. Any ideas on how to do this? I didn't know it wouldn't have a place for it. Here's an example of the cage.
