My son wants to enter his leo into the San Diego Fair's "Pocket Pet" contest for kids, sponsored by a local pet hospital. It's a one-day event, we will probably be at the event for no more than 2 hours, and then plan to take the little guy back home. We live about 20 minutes from the fairgrounds. The leo is a very healthy 5 month old. The pets stay in their enclosures the whole time through the contest, each one is brought up to the judge individually and the contest is based on Condition of pet; Temperament; Exhibitor’s knowledge of the pet and its care (which is a great opportunity to help my son really study up on his pet (my son is 6)).
I want to make the whole thing as non-stressful as possible for the leo. I'm planning on transporting him in an opaque tuperware box with paper towels on the bottom and his favorite hide included (which I can easily lift up for viewing if he's shy at judging time). My husband will hold the box in his lap as we drive to the show. The box is obviously smaller than his regular home, about the size of a shoe box.
Do I need to worry about belly heat or temps during the trip? The event is in June, in temperate San Diego, so air temps will be comfortable. He will not be in any direct sun, except maybe as we carry him from the car and into the exhibit hall. I could bring a hot water bottle... I'll definitely bring my temp gun to keep an eye on things.
We usually feed at night, so the leo will have had all night to digest the food from the day before.
Any other ideas? Anyone who has done a show or something with their own leos?
Wish us luck! Reptile Best In Show ribbon, here we come!! :main_cool3:
