Yup, that thermometer is the right one. And for the heat pad, did you get a rheostat or a lamp dimmer so you can adjust the temps? (I just skimmed the posts this time, I don't remember seeing that mentioned before) If not, Lowe's has the lamp dimmer for about $19.

I Would go with an Acu-Rite thermometer. They are cheap and really reliable. Can get one at any hone improvement store, Kmart,Walmart, etc.

without the thermometer how will i know if the heat pad makes the floor to hot?

Well, really, you won't, and that's where the purpose and beauty of the good ol' thermometer comes in. Ideal temps for the heat mat should be around 90-95 degrees. Over that would be too hot for the gecko. I'd strongly recommend a thermostat or rheostat to properly control the temps, as well.
I guess there is one way you could tell if the heat pad is too hot, your gecko will obviously be on the cool side if it thinks the same, but still, a thermometer is the most accurate and appropriate way to tell.

darren;659139]and since its summer and i have my AC on during the night, should i leave the heat pad on during the night and leave the black heat buld on both at the same time? since the heat pad is heating the hot side during the day and the buld is heating the cold side during the night.

I don't think you'll need the black heat light. I just keep the UTH (the only heat source for my geckos) on 24/7 and they do perfectly fine. It all depends on the temperatures of the heat pad, just make sure its not too hot or too cool for the gecko, maintain a good temperature.
