he looks old so just take your time. a new place and a new owner is stressfull. with my older ones i started by just sitting quietly with a hand in the tank letting them come to you. learning your not going to hurt him and building up trust.
i find mine would come and sit on you in time, treat items like wax worms helps build trust to :)
then once thats happend you can try lifting him up for short holds
good luck

Nice big healthy fellow you got there! :main_thumbsup: What do you mean, old, sausage... he can get 20, so if he's about 5 or so now, he's in his best years, and more to come :D

I used to have mine on woodchips (big ones they couldn't swallow), but it's really a bad idea -- even if you get bigger ones, escaping mealworms and crickets will breed in them happily, and you have no control over cleanliness... The feeders poop a lot! So tile or hydroton clayballs make a nice natural-looking alternative, or ordinary paper towels if you just go for safety, not beauty :main_yes:

Have fun with your new pal!

i know what you mean about trust but i need to clean his tank out as he on this wood chip that i dont really like and there is poo in there with him.
the guy who did not look after him tipped loads of meal worms in there with him and now they are black beatles that i really want rid of.
when he first came to me he slept all the time in his log which is more on the hot end but last 3 days he not realy moved outa the cold corner end.

Well, for the sake of cleaning, you could gently "herd" him into a smaller tupperware box...then you can put that box into something escape proof like a large cardboard box or plastic bin (don't put the lid on the tupperware). That way you won't have to grab him.

Proceed to clean and put him back in...He may not like it, it may take an extra week or 3 to trust you after that, but I think it's better than leaving him to get jumpier with all those beetles crawling around with him...

On the plus side, since you have beetles, once he's clean you ~could~ start a mealie colony...if you want to take the time.

He does look very healthy. I bet you'll be friends quicker than you think. Just don't grab him overhand until he learns to trust you.
