Hiding all the time?

I am getting a leopard gecko in a few weeks, and was wondering since they are nocturnal if I would see them much? I just read an article that they sleep all the time in the day, and want to see them and hold them in the day.

You won't see them roaming about much during the day. They are most active during dusk/dawn, and at night or whenever it's dark. It's their nature. I suggest do your feeding and holding in the evenings/night for best results.

Is there a way to accustom them to a diurnal lifestyle? Perhaps making them think it is night/ reversing their cycle?

Really?? If you want an animal thats always out in the day get a beardie or something similar. You don't attempt to change an animals behavior/instincts to better suit your your needs. Thats pretty selfish IMO.

I agree with Brad. They're pretty hardwired to be nocturnal. They evolved to have different needs (or ways of obtaining them) than a diurnal reptile. If you want a reptile to be more active on your schedule then get a beardie.

I agree. You can hold them in the daytime, just try to limit it. It's actually really cute, because if you have a gecko and it trusts you, it will sleep on you, because it trusts you to look out for predators. My late gecko William used to sleep on me all the time.
But if you want something that is easy to take care of and is active during daytime, get a bearded dragon, just keep in mind that they get really big.

That's why I cant get a beardie is the space. Since you are 10 williamtheleopardgecko, and obviously love leopards because your original passed and you are getting another one, what drives you to get another one, since you probably have a bedtime?
(no offense on your age, im 13 and I have a bedtime)

I meant to write bigger than leopard geckos... Sorry about that.
Really 4feet? My parents would never let me have a lizard that big! That's why I couldn't get a snake...

I already have another one, Oliver(sorry about my last post, you posted before I could :() turns out William had parasites:(
Leopards are really great animals, easy to take care of, you just have to know what to do.
I really love animals, always had, so that's why I got another one. And I enjoyed having William so much, my mom said I could get another gecko, and that's how I got Oliver.
PS I don't have an official bedtime:p

(OMG I CAN NEVER WRITE FAST ENOUGH:p)
William was from PetSmart, and Oliver from a good Petco.
Make sure they are a good weight and hunt good and just overall look healthy.
Don't worry about the questions, I'm happy to help with anything I can.;)

Hey Apples to apples,
I didn't buy from PetSmart again because they used repticarpet, and that could carry diseases, and if William was sick it could have added the disease to them. My mom pointed that out.
If you buy from a pet store, like PetSmart or Petco, I suggest taking them to the vet to make sure it is not sick.

No? I was misinformed then... You can not trust some people!
Anyway, I thought it was cute.
It's my understanding that when they're "sleeping" on you, it's actually them closing their eyes to try to pretend you're not there and hoping they don't get eaten. Perhaps I'm wrong, but since whatshisface was too rude to give you correct information, that's the best I can give.

I'm pretty sure there's no consensus among all the stores for each chain what substrate they use. Like everything else about how the animals are cared for, I believe it comes down to the manager of that particular store.
Awesome, Im considering those stores, but am worried about diseases.
Why are you getting a leo if you want something you can handle during the day? It's already been established that leos don't fit that description.

I quarantine new geckos in 10 gallon tanks in my living room and have had some that come out and watch me all day long and even follow me back and forth in their cages. Some others I have almost never seen outside a hide. I think seeing them depends on the individual gecko. IMO albinos may be more reluctant than normals to come out during the day since their eyes are light sensitive.

Juveniles stress out a bunch from handling but once they reach a decent size (40+ grams) I can't see a problem handling them at any time of the day or night. I just wouldn't recommend handling them for really long periods of time or every single day.

I kinda gathered that was what this person was looking for, but maybe that was a miscommunication. I handle mine briefly any time of the day (though I try to keep it near dusk) on occasion, but they're certainly not animals for real frequent handling and daytime amusement.

That may be true, but I remember William was really "sleeping". His eyes were closed, and he curled up somewhere, and whenever he heard a loud noise he would open his eyes. He really looked like that. But, that was when he knew me and got used to me, so maybe he used to do that, but then got used to me. Again, I'm not really sure, but now I know I can't trust some care guides on the Internet posted by some random person who may be making the stuff up, or is just clueless.
I just wanted to make sure that the substrate wouldn't carry it on, and they looked kinda thin, so I don't even buy crickets there anymore. I may get some stuff from there, but no food because maybe the crickets have something to William, and they're cooped up in the bin all day long with barely any water, or food, but with a bunch of the egg cartons.
You see, I just wanted to make sure my other gecko would join William, out of health issues.
Apples to apples decided getting a Leo would be best, since he can't get a beardie out of space. Besides, he probably has school to do anyway, and I'm not sure how long his is, but that gives Oliver 7 hours of peace and quiet for me.
And he can hold his Leo during the day, but not that much, so he decided to get a Leo.
;)
