Luke, do not buy your geckos from a petstore, get it from either a breeder or go to a reptile show ( usaully cheaper there) do LOTS of research, keep in mind that the setup not including the gecko is going to cost you almost a $100 if not more. No offense to julie but her leo just died after only a few days of owning it and she got a new one a few days later which if you ask me she should have waited longer till she'd done more research, try asking people with more experience for advice. Julie im not trying to offend you your just to knew to the hobby.

A few months. William died after 4 months and 4 days exactly. And I figured out why he died and it wasn't my fault, I just didn't catch the parasites in time.
Now Oliver I bought from Petco and he's very healthy and a good hunter. Just have to work on his weight a bit.
Plus, I do not want a hobby, I want a pet. I never ever had a real pet before, so owning one is new to me.

Oh yeah I wasn't planning on getting Oliver I just stumbled upon a good Petco with a lot of healthy animals so I got what I needed (a new hide, new repticarpet, a new thermometer with a probe) bleached the stuff and got Oliver.

But see im saying that chainstores are not good places to get herps. I assume you didnt get a fecal exame done to make shure oliver dosent have parasites, and how do you know hes healthy? See, ive owned reptiles for eight years and i know for a fact you cant just look at a gecko that LOOKS healthy and say its healthy, and im not saying i know it all but im not new either and if I dont do it than you definatley shouldnt. im shure you thought william was healthy and he had paristes, whos to say oliver dosent? Im not trying to be rude, Im trying to help you help others.

99.9% of reptile will have some form of parasite in them, the same as humans.
most of the time the parasites go unnoticed for most if not all of the reptiles life. normally a problem becomes apparent when the reptile becomes over run and cant cope with the burden any more, by then it could be too late. this could be due to many factors but the biggest is stress.
Stress from moving/ bullying ect ect pretty much any kind of change suppresses the immune system allowing the parasites to take over.

One of my geckos iv had for over five years, he tops the scales at over 100g, is happy and healthy. I recently moved and registered with a new vet who was offering free health checks for reptiles when you registered so I took him along. he tested positive for parasites, vet reckons he had them from a hatching. probs got them from the breeder (has now been treated and is clear) but it just goes to show you how parasites can go undetected.

William slept on you because he was sick. He probably didn't have the energy to run away (Sounds harsh, but I don't mean it that way). Juvenile leopard geckos are VERY fast and squirmy. If it's NOT sick and you take it out to "play" with it, you are most likely going to end up with either a missing gecko or a gecko with a dropped tail.If you want something cute that you can handle and stuff get a hamster or guinea pig or something. Rats make REALLY good pets. They are super clean and smart, LOVE to be handled and can even be taught tricks!

Very true! If you want something friendly, intelligent, easily handled, and low maintenance, rats are the way to go. I have one and she's the best. I'm not a fan of small furry animals, but I adore her and will likely get another one when she passes. She loves to climb all over me, and even sits on my shoulder while I'm doing chores. When she's out in her ball, she comes when I call her and follows me around.

Indeed! I had a pet rat and I loved her to PIECES! She was SOOO cute. She would nest in the hair at the nape of my neck, then fall asleep and every now and again I would hear a contented little squeak. :sweetheart: ALSO, leopard geckos (when PROPERLY taken care) can live up to 20 years OR MORE. Please think about the animal and don't make it suffer because you wanted a pet that is not right for you. I PROMISE if you get a rat you will love it SO much. Rats are REALLY fun little pets.

EDIT: ALSO Leopard Geckos require a special herp vet. They can't just go to your regular dog and cat vet. And most of the time these herp vets are a LONG way away from your house. The closest one to me is 50 miles away, but I know people that drive 3 hours or more JUST to get their gecko to a herp vet. And you NEED to take geckos to the vet too. It's not fair that people go.. "Oh it's just a $30 lizard, so it doesn't have the RIGHT to go to the vet." So it's just going to suffer and die a long, slow and painful death.

I'm taking a bookcase and transforming it into a five-level cage for her. Got the doors and stuff, just gotta cut holes in the shelves and put the doors on their hinges. And I'm making ropes, hammocks, ladders, etc. I can't wait til it's all done. =D

I know we have a herp vet close to us.:)
I knew they live up to 20 years. (I love studying any type of animal. I could go to the zoo and state a fact about almost every animal in the zoo)
Rats sound like fun, but my mom HATES them. Whenever she's around them she almost throws up!
I love leopard geckos. They are so cute and easy to care of and is just awesome.
I'm also sad that I didn't know that William was sick... Everyone said he looked healthy.
I knew something was wrong but they wouldn't listen.:(

I had a hamster before, he hated me.(I mean literally, and I wasn't responsible enough then, I was like seven)
I never play with my gecko. I take him out to hold him but mostly just leave him alone to explore someplace where I can see him, or just leave him be and he goes right to sleep.
And I never pull his tail. Ever.

I'm not talking about you Julie. You shouldn't be encouraging Luke to get a leopard gecko when his first question is... "Is there a way I can change it's natural cycle so it's up during the day?" They are not meant to be up during the day and a leopard gecko is NOT the right pet for him! He wants something that is up and active during the day for one and that is NOT a leopard gecko! I am TRYING to keep another one from suffering needlessly.
