Hitching a ride on your head...

As most of you know by now, I've only had my gecko for a little less than 2 weeks. Once I began handling it, I was quite surprised to find how friendly and adventerous it was. By the third day of handling, he/she (still not quite sure as now the pores seem to be more apparent... but the little booger just won't sit still long enough to catch a decent picture :main_laugh:) was willing to climb up and sit on my shoulder. Unfortunately, it doesn't like staying still so I always worried about it climbing down my back, which sure enough it has tried many times already. I rarely let it sit on my shoulder for more than a few seconds because of this, but today it just insisted on being up there.

Next thing I know, it's climbing up my hair and is walking around on the top of my head. Now I have very long hair, so I was very worried that it would either fall off as my hair shifted or that it would attempt to burrow. I'd rather not have a gecko hiding in my hair :main_laugh:

I only wish I had gotten a picture. I certainly hope it loses interest in my head as it ages, or I may have to get a shorter haircut.

I know there are others on the site that allow their geckos to ride on their head, do you ever worry about it?

And for those of you who don't like their pets on their head, have you had to train one not to climb so high?

LOL. all of mine are still too skittish, but I'm too afraid that they would fall off, even sitting down, it would be a long fall.

mine does it if i let her! the first place she goes usually is to my shoulder. she will just sit there. last night i had to get something out of the oven and she just sat there the whole time.. and didn't even care what i was doing. she climbs up on my head occasionally, when i'm sittin on the couch. and it doesnt bother me.. but most of the time it's from one shoulder to the other.. (and down my back) I used to be really worried that she would fall. but she is a really good climber. :) (she climbs out of her tank pretty often)

so i really wouldn't worry about trying to train her not to climb so high. or on your head. ;)

I always make sure I'm handling him above my bed, that way if he falls, at least he'll land on something soft. It still worries me though as I know I wouldn't handle a fall that large very well lol. I always keep a hand by him at all times as well, more in the hope that he will decide to walk on my hand instead of my shoulder or head but also to hopefully steady him if he starts to slide.

I don't know that I'll ever be able to walk with him riding on me, I'm too paranoid :main_laugh:

It is reassuring that they are such good climbers, I'll just have to train myself to be more trusting.

Nyx likes to be picked up by me and walk all over my shoulders, but with two adult cats and 3 foster kittens, it's not a good idea as they are VERY interested in her. LOL. Once the kittens are in their new home, I will let Nyx explore my shoulders while being locked in the bedroom away from the "dangers" in the livingroom. She'll even wear a harness....which I think is VERY weird for a small lizard to be ok with. :\

I saw a gecko harness/leash at the petstore just the other day and wondered if they actually worked :main_laugh:
I'd love to see a pic of your girl wearing hers!

My adult female will just cling to my chest and hitch a ride. As for my smaller albino she likes to get on my back because she knows I can't reach her :)

I have one that climbs on my hand, up to my shoulder, back of my neck, to the top of my head...I put my ball cap on and he rides to the post office to get him wax worms. He gets as many as he'll eat upon our return.
The post office people know him by now................take care. HJ
