I currently have 1 female that is pretty close to full size and im thinking about getting another gecko. She is in a 25 gallon so i no there will be enough room for 2. I would like to get a male just because i like the fact that they get bigger and i am also considering breeding. is it ok for a male and a female to live together all the time or will it cause problems? Am i better of just getting another female?

This is a highly debatable topic, so you will get many answers. My best advice is that if you want a male, you will need an extra cage for him at some point, so get another female if you don't want to get another cage yet.

Personally, we keep our males with their females year around because we haven't had any problems, we have multiple females for each male, and they all get along great. However, we do have an extra cage just in case separation needs to take place (as it has recently). The biggest issue is, will the male oversex your female? With multiple females, the chances of any one being oversexed are lowered. So of course, one female with one male is more likely to end in oversexing. However, females give off a "no signal" and we believe that if the male respects this signal, you shouldn't have to worry about much.

The "no signal," as we have observed, is usually a tail smack to the face or something similar. If the male backs off, then there really shouldn't be any oversexing at all. The female will "take it" when she wants to. However, if the male continues his advances, he probably needs to be caged alone.

So you see, it's really trial and error, hence why you need an extra cage just in case...

Also, no matter what sex you house with your current leo, make sure they are of silimar size. Noticeable size differences may cause problems (i.e. bullying). Furthermore, you will always have to monitor your leos to make sure that no bullying is going on...leos are so diverse in their perssonalities, you never know when you'll come across one that just cannot be housed with others. Bullying can also be very hard to spot, as it may only happen at night, so make sure all leos are eating and pooping on a normal basis, and that none have any battle scars! Also provide plenty of food as necessary to try to illiminate competition.

Hope this helps!

I would wait to introduce a Male untill the female is 50 grams first. I would get anouth female then when both are 50 grams get a male. Thats just my opinion.

That too, I forgot to mention that females are not safe to breed or even have around a male until they are 1 year old and at least 50 grams in weight.

just as john said, if you stick a male in with her. they will undoubtly at some point mate and can cause probs for an imature female. i say imature by weight not age.

Plus youll have eggs and have to deal with those. So if you really want two geckos living together its better try another female, and that doesnt always work out anyways. But i agree, if you want a male another tank is a must.

im not sure of her weight right now but i will weigh her next week. im guessing she is around 50 grams. I dont think she is a year old tho i have had her for 6 months and im guessing she was around a month old when i got her. I am going to wait for a reptile expo to buy another which will either be june or september. How close in size will the new one have to be with the one i have now

Males and females really don't thrive when they are housed together, or even right next to each other for that matter. They smell each other's pheromones and get excited, stressed, and distracted from food. Plus, they will mate eventually so you'll have to get an incubator and a rack or lots of tanks to house the babies since they would be all different sizes. I'm not trying to discourage you from breeding, there are just a lot of costs and responsibilities to consider before hand.

If you get a female, just try to find one that as close to the same size and estimated age as possible.

You should still have a separate tank for the quarantine period of 60-90 days. The last thing you want to do is buy a new gecko that has a parasite and introduce it to the new one. TRUST me on this. I also want to add that even if you get another female of the same size, there is NO guarantee that they will get along. This again brings up the point of needing two cages, just incase they don't get along. If you do get a second gecko and plan to house them together (after quarantine). COMPLETELY clean out the cage before you place them together. Hopefully this will wash away all scents and the gecko that was their first won't think of it as its territory.

ok im pretty convinced that i will get another female, im in college so i dont have the money or space to get a breeding set-up going. I have a 10 gallon that mine used to be housed in so i could use that for the new one to quarantine it. I have been thinking latly tho if i want to just stick with one leo and get a ball python ( oviously not housed together lol) so many decisions lol.It sucks that one leo has got me addicted to reptiles lol.
