I was told by a breeder that you can house a male and female together without her
ovulating so she doesn't get pregnant so they can be companions. He said having the
hot side on 90 and the cool side on 82 will keep her from ovulating. Is this true? Also,
will he still try to mate with her? Will she get stressed? Pregnant? Lay eggs? etc.

Never heard that before. I was actually told by a breeder u can put them together to encourage ovulation. I house mine together throughout the year separate them during breeding season so i know when they breed.

Sounds like that person isnt really a breeder but someone trying to make a qucik sale. Lol. You cant stop them from ovulating. Its a natural thing. When shes of age/size/weight she will ovulate regardless. You dont have to "cycle" leos. He will try to mate with her...If you go under discusions and look at "my poor baby" or something you'll see what happens when a male gets told no and doesnt back off...Poor girl. She will indeed get stressed. Some go off eating they get so stressed. She could lay eggs, she may not. Cant say. Regardless its not a ideal idea to house them together:/ Companion? Leos in no way want "friends" they enjoy being alone...expect the males when they wanna..."get busy"...Breeding is the only time a male and female should come together. there are just to many things that could go wrong if she refuses to mate...

Really? Wow, I want to kill him now! He made it sound like they could be together without me having to worry about her ovulating, now I have a male and female together in one cage and no way of getting another cage for a while... what should I do?

Nope no nada! Animals will follow their natural instincts, birth control isn't one of them :)

This is who I bought it from: http://www.geckosetc.com

You can make a perfectly good cage for one from a rubbermaid/sterilite/etc. type storage tub, set it up just like a tub in a rack system but keep the lid.

Ive never ordered from them but next time be sure to look around and see what others experince with them and ask ALOT of questions. Most times good breeders will happily talk about the geckos but if there vague and dont like answering then you know they just want a sale... if you have them set up right(ie in a 20 long how they should be 10 aint big enough) then you can easily split that in 2 10s. just means another UTH. Its not a bad thing that you got 2 just bad that they told you wrong. You probably have 2 very pretty geckos that will be more then happy alone. Its a shame they lied but instead of looking at only the negitive look at the good and what you can do. Also check craigslist.org too and see if maybe you can get another set-up for cheap but what tony suggested too is just as good.

Sid tried mating with her the second he got into her cage, she gave him a little kick and opened her mouth, then he didn't bother her again for the rest of the night. Then again, she's about 78 grams and he's about 68 so maybe he doesn't wanna get eaten, LOL. It's been about 15+ hours since she's been in his cage and he doesn't even acknowledge her unless she tries to lay by him, in which case he kinda just stares and licks ("smells") her nose/forehead. Otherwise they seem to go into their own hides and occasionally sleep together, do you think it'd be okay until I get another cage? I really have nothing like that to keep her in, the only thing we have is small plastic containers for leftovers, and I have nothing small enough to put in the middle of the cage to keep them apart that they wouldn't knock down or squeeze past. I can go out Monday (I'd go now but don't have a car, and there are no tank within my range of money (since I just bought a bunch of decor and a bigger cage for them to be in together) to buy another tank today or this week), do you think they'd be okay til then?

That answer upsets me even more. He says that they mate "now". When did he think you were going to put them together? What happened to the explanation about the temperature in the case? If he really believes what he just wrote then what he told he was garbage and he knew it.

This guy is a real ass.

Do you think she will be alright in Sid's cage until I can get her a new 20 gallon and decor? (Monday - Tuesday most likely)

....Id think someone whos bred that long would know that leos dont need to be burmated...4 of my girls have started laying and i did nothing to the temps. Its a natural part of life. There gonna ovulate with or without a cooling prossess. Cooling is just so you can control when they ovulate and breed rather then guess. Id watch them carfully. Just coz he took no for a answer that time doesnt mean he'll continue taking it...He is a teenage boy after allXD He'll keep pressuring her to mate and eventually she will give in she may not give you eggs right after but they do keep sperm....To throw the eggs out>.< I hate when people suggest that. I know babies are alot of work but dang to have the female go threw all that then just throw them out?(freezing first) she should be ok till you can but the sooner the better.

Something you can do in the meanwhile to seperte the tank is to cut up a cardboard box, get a flat panel long enough and tall enough to make a soid barrier wall betweem them. Cut it a little longer so you can kinda cut "tabs" along each side that touches the tank then use some duct tape or clear packing tape to tape the tabs to the tank making the barrier secure. It's not pretty, and certainly not permanent but it should keep them apart until you can afford to properly set up another tank. Just curious but what's your set up like? Temps, substrait, hides etc. Kinda curious to see how else this person misled you on their care that is IF you asked him for advice on yoru set up as well.

Omg I just noticed that Steve is a sponsored breeder here on the forum. Wow wouldn't expect that kind of off info to come from him. That's kinda disappointing.

2 in a 10? No one will tel you that>.> 10 is barely good enough for one let alone 2...Housing mutliple females together CAN be done but its no easy task. I keep 4 females together and i never recommend others doing it as there are many risks involved...It is a shame definatly..LOL males grow faster then females huh? you better tell my guys to speed up! all there girls have out grew them!XDD

I'm wondering if the op might have mistaken some of the info they were given 'cause I wouldn't expect to hear info like that coming from an experienced breeder/keeper like Steve. Are you sure you heard everything correctly hon?

Umm, I bought from Steve several times, all I can say is that he knows his stuff and he is a nice person to deal with. About the 10G for 2 leo part, he meant that as a MINIMUM.
