Housing Question?

I'm geting a gecko for my first time and was wondering what is the esential stuff I need in my cage. Substrate, heating, ECT. I would also like to know where to place them. Also what temp should I have each side and how do I regulate it. I do not want to spend a fortune on it but I would like it to be safe and good for my geckos. This may seem like a stupid question and I could probably look at a care sheet but I thought i would just post it here.

Thanks

First off I would recommend using a 20 gallon long tank. You can use a 10 gallon, but I find that it's a bit cramped for an adult.

Substrate-wise, you should use paper towel, tile, slate or repti-carpet. No loose substrates as stated by Amber.

You should purchase a proper sized UTH and place it underneath the tank (hence the name lol). This should run you about $15-$25 depending on brand

You will need a decent thermometer, either one with a probe or a temperature gun. This will usually run about $20 and up, the more you spend the more accurate it is likely to be, which is very important.

It's also a good idea to buy a Rheostat or a thermostat that will contol your UTH. The cheapest I've found was about $15... and in all honesty it isn't a very good one. These can be expensive, but it's for the safety of your animal.

Now for hides, you will need three total, one warm one cool and one moist. The warm hide obviously goes over the UTH, the cool hide on the opposite side of the tank, and the moist hide can really go just about anywhere. I keep mine in the middle. Price ranges on these because there really are endless possibilities. You can take the time and make your own such as you can find here :

Or you can just buy some from the petstore. This seems to be a pretty common hide used:

You should always have a water dish in the tank. Once again, price ranges because you can always improvise and make your own, or purchase one from a petstore.

A calcium dish is a must have as well, you can use something as simple as the lid to a pringle can.

Food dish is up to you, depending on what you plan on using as feeders.

You can always add things to decorate and spice the tank up, but these are the basics that you really need.
You can always check out the Show of Your Cages thread for ideas on how to arrange your tank.

And as a heads up, it would have taken you alot less time to search the forums for your answers, than it took to get replys ;)
