Is a hovabator more than the sum of it's parts. If it is just styrofoam and a heating element then why don't more people just make one?

Cooler (plastic or styro) + heat tape + thermostat = incubator

Or am I missing something?

people do make them.

I made one. :main_thumbsup:

I had a cooler laying around as well as some flexwatt so I wired the tape through the drain in the cooler, put about 24 water bottles in there for stability and hooked it up to a thermostat. ZERO $$. Well I did buy the bottled water.... so it was $3

I was just wondering if there was a function to the design of the hovabator that allowed it to do something that was not so obvious to someone that hasn't used one before. This is my first time incubating eggs so....

Yes, the tape is on the bottom, attached with foil tape. Water bottles on top of that. Then a shoe box sterilte bin with vermiculite and a small dish of water for humidity (in the shoe box). I also keep the lid on the cooler slightly cracked for air flow.

I built an incubator for fun out of a styrofoam cooler, a big heat rock (that came with my geckos when I rescued them, but I obviously never used), and bottles of water. I don't have anything to incubate and don't plan to for at least a year or 2, but even with just a dimmer the temps are quite stable.
