is it necessary to have a thermostat for a hovabator?

I use the wafer setup on my hovabator with a Tupperware container of water to help temperature control and a thermometer. I plan on ordering a new hovabator soon and taking the wafer out and using something a little more accurate.

it's not necessary, but for best results it's preferred.
