How do I get my temps up?

I have a pretty large UTH which spans half of my tank, I have a 40 gallon breeder, and am using repti carpet. I haven't had a probe thermometer in it, honestly I think my dad would crap a brick if I put his meat thermometer in there... ahhh.. maybe oh well I should still try it. Ambient air on the warm side is around 80.

Anyone have any good ideas?

If the ambient air is around 80, it's likely that the floor temp is considerably higher (not to mention the temperature under the hides) and probably anywhere from fine to too hot.

My temp is coming probably from a 1cm away from the floor. I was thinking more around 85. I will check it.

the floor temps are what matter especially with a uth. like what acpart said If you're measuring the air at 80, the floor temps are going to be way higher.
