How large of a colony (dubias) to start with? And a question about mealworms.

Hey everyone!

I'm hoping to start getting some leos, other gecko species, and a beardie or two. I don't like supporting the pet stores around here, plus the closest supplier of dubias is almost 2hrs away. I would like to start my own colony of Dubias that I can start feeding from within a couple months. So my question is, how many Dubias should I start off with in order to feed a small group of 2-3 Leos, and an adult beardie or two?

And I also have a question about mealworms. I've read that some people feed their Leos exclusively mealworms, but other articles I've read always say to use crickets as the main food source and only using other feed items as treats. Are there any health issues related to feeding exclusively mealies, or using them as part of a diet along with dubias?

Thank you!

Hi, I'm not an expert, but I know that there are definitely no health concerns with feeding both mealies and dubias together, or feeding them exclusively. Personally I feed my geckos just mealies.:toilet:<----i like this

I started with about a hundred and fifty dubias, and 4 months later I have plenty for 2 leos and 2 firebellied toads, but I couldn't feed a beardie with them. There have been enough to get my sisters beardie a couple dozen that have gotten too big for my leos.

Superworms are better than mealworms. You can feed them both exclusively. Variety is best IMO. In your quote you have lots of pets( I wish I could)! What is a BCI??

A BIC is a Boa constrictor imperator AKA common boa constrictor.

With dubia, you can never start with too many, especially when dragons are involved. To feed a couple of adult dragons alone I wouldn't start with less than 600+ adults if you want to be able to do so in a matter of a few months. 1000 would be better.

There is nothing wrong with feeding mealworms. I used mealworms and superworms exclusively for my leos for years.
