I know that in captivity breeding season can last all year but when do they usually stop? I really want to make some more eggs but i think my female may be done:main_thumbsdown: :( She has 1 egg incubating right now. This is her first year and she has laid 4 eggs. 2 fertile, 2 infertile. She hasnt laid in like 3 weeks. Think shes done? If i were to get a different pair do you think they would mate?

it all really depends i know most dont cool off leos but did you? when did your pair start breeding and soo on need a little back ground info to help narrow it down for you most breeders tend to start up around the same time some can go all year and some just pick the months they want to be there breeding season it all depends on what you did with your pair but if you are looking for a stated from the books type answer i think the end of the season is close to aug. i may be wrong but i think this is what i saw in one or more of my books.

We noticed our females have already somewhat slowed down, then again this is their first year breeding. From Jan till mid March they both were dropping clutches every 10-15 days like clockwork. Then all of a sudden their last clutches were 3-4 weeks apart. Does this mean anything? Not sure if it does or not, but I took note of it.

As the female gets to the end of her season the time between clutches will grow. Gerry's scenario tells me that the female is probably close to being done. She may pop out 2-3 more clutches but I wouldn't expect much more than that. My one female last year consistently took 3-4 more days between each clutch until the end of the season. For her last clutch it was some where between 3-4 weeks.

I hope that helps you guys out some.

Thegeckoguy, the length of the season all depends on age and the individual female. Not all females have the ability to lay for a year, not to mention that it would be very bad for the female to do that. A typical season last about 6 months. A first year female will most likely lay less eggs thus causing her season to be shorter.

What if your female starts producing clutches faster? We have one that produced her first two clutches in 30-day increments, but her third clutch came in 23 days, and she is a first-year breeder... ?

Thanks Stitch, that sets my mind at ease a bit.

For their first season so far, one of the females has laid 8 clutches (16 eggs) and the other has laid 6 clutches (12 eggs). If they lay another 2-3 clutches this year, would it be safe to say that it was a good season considering it was their first?

Thanks

Definitely!! Here is a table of expected amount of eggs based on the age of the female.

It's nothing to worry about Jess. What I mentioned is what I have observed. Odd things happen all the time. Again, it's no big deal that she laid the third faster then the others.

In that table, are the eggs supposed to be individual eggs or clutches?
I guess we must be doing something right....:D

It should be eggs. I've never heard of a female laying 16 clutches.

REMEMBER, that each female is different and that table is just a guide.

I thought I read somewhere that females can lay up to 18-20 clutches a year? Maybe I'm mistaken, or was it 18-20 eggs?...

I would guess they meant 18-20 eggs.

Ditto. 18-20 will not happen with every female nor will it heppen every year. Those are rare cases that a female lays 18-20 eggs. The norm is more like 12-16 eggs a year, so that would be 6-8 clutches.

yes, the table is just a guide, it's an average calculation from a sample population of females, so not all females will lay scripture along with the table.. and yes, the count is eggs and not clutches ;)

Thanks ;) Someone else (just double-checked, it was Lottiz) got a clutch of 3 eggs (and they all looked rather good) so there's another example of odd happenings!
