And how long at a time? Mine is really cool & sometimes i forget that he's tolerating me, not enjoying me holding him & having him climb my hands while i watch tv. lol
My older gecko actually seems to like being handled. Even if I'm just changing her water, she always tries to climb up onto my hands/arms and she really likes sitting on my shoulder. I think leos are just like any other animal, some of them enjoy being handled and some of them don't. As long as he doesn't appear to be stressed I wouldn't worry about it!
I hardly ever handle my geckos for personal pleasure. Since I am breeding them I try to keep stress to a minimum. They get handled way more often for cleaning and weighing then they do just for fun.
The male isn't really into being handled much. The female would spend 15 minutes or more with my 6 yr old before she started to show any signs of "I'm bored with you."
I have handled my babies since they came out of the egg. I sold one and the girl just loves her because she is calm. The one I kept is still nice, and calm and enjoys being handled. I have some geckos that can't stand being held and I have others that as soon as I open the lid they come out wanting out.
I handle my geckos every day. There are certain ones that stress out when handled so I don't bother them too often. I can't help it, I just have to at least hold one a day. There are certain ones that are extremely calm that I let my nieces and nephews handle. I also think it is important to handle them when they are very young so they can get used to it. A lot of people who buy geckos are buying them as pets, not just breeders. as a breeder I feel it is my responsibility to get the babies used to handling for their future owner. I try to handle hatchling at least a few seconds a day. It's working out really well and most of my hatchlings are hand tame already. This is my second season and I have not lost a tail yet so I think I'm doing an alright job at handling them.
I handle My geckos two to three time aa week. I agree with alot of the input from everyone. I give a few of my geckos each year to friends that have kids and to a few of my teacher friends for class pets( i do make sure that they all have the right set up and are well informed about all aspects of these animals) . I like to make sure they get used to people and not being locked up in a tub or drawer. I have a few that just do not like being handled so I leave them alone except for cleaning. I also have a couple too that when I clean out their space that just climb on my hand once it has been in their cage and they know it is not food.
I like to handle my males because they seem so calm especially one of my giants. Either i handle a couple of them after i feed them or just when im cleaning their enclosures. Not too much.
I handle them daily. Well, most of them...I have one lizards that seems to have a personality disorder..and being that he hates the sight of me, we let him be.
