How to feed a non-eater/new gecko

I figured out a way to feed geckos that are off their food or are new and hard to get to eat. Non-eaters is a typical problem many of us face from time to time! I figured out a way to make eating irresistable to even the toughest case. I do NOT believe in force feeding either. It is traumatic to the gecko and a big setback to the bonding and taming process. So how do you get them to eat wthout grabbing them and prying their little mouths open?
Try this.
Get some medium size crickets, not too small not big. Put a few in a small dixie cup and proceed to remove their hind legs and a few other legs with tweezers. This sounds gross but actually crickets are like crabs and live just fine this way. This will allow the crickets to crawl but not jump or scurry away from your timid gecko.
Now, in the evening when your gecko is out, using red bulbs for some minimal lighting, remove whatever contents/hides you can from the cage without disturbing the gecko. Do this slowly without banging the cage and making noise.
Then when the gecko looks like he is in an open area and calm, carefully drop a de-legged cricket about an inch or two in front of their nose....quietly and carefully placed. The cricket will start to crawl and your gecko will dive on it and eat it. Give it 1-2 more crickets in the same fashion to see if you can get him to eat them all. Then quit until you resume the process the next day with just a few crickets like this. Once you get your gecko eating he will be fine on his own.
Try it, it works great!

I wish it were that easy. My guys just might be stubborn.

This technique will work on the pickiest of eaters. Try it. Once you condition them to eating regularly they will turn into pigs in no time!

Mine just ignore them. They literally lick at them, then turn away and sit in the corner. My geckos, though, don't actually like crickets lol

I got the same technique with geckonut. My hatchling back then was having a hard time with his vision, so I had to de-legged some pinheads then gently pinch 'em and rub it in the hatchlings mouth. After that I enjoyed watching the tail wagging and pouncing. :D

I was also using a red bulb as a light source back then.

Need to try something....

I've had my new leopard gecko since 4/25, and I have not seen her eat yet. Not once. We are going on a month here. I keep freshly fed/hydrated mealworms in there for her at all times. I supply dusted and non-dusted live crickets. Nothing. I have already taken all the items in the cage out so that maybe she could get to the crickets easier, but she seemed very stressed by that and kept looking for her moist hide that she uses most of them time. I have checked my temps, tested the UTH temp. w/ a digital therm. w/ probe, and it is around 92-93. The moist hide sits halfway over the UTH and she likes it there. But when I turn on the overhead light, she will usually move from that to one of 3 other hides, for a little cooler spot. She has fresh water at all times too. I keep paper towels on floor only, and she is in a 20g glass tank w/ screen top. Her poops/urates are minimal: extremely small, since she is not eating anything...that I can see anyway. When I first got her, she did have bigger poops, as if she was eating before I got her. Her tail is still large, but I think she is using the fat reserves in it to sustain her; otherwise, I don't know what she is possibly pooping out. I'm so frustrated.

I am going to get new crickets today, and I guess I will try the method described in this thread...but this time I guess removing back legs. Makes me feel bad but I need to try something.

I've even tried waxworms...I've even tried isolating her in a small container with a worm or two...she just walks on them and looks annoyed.

Don't know what else to do.

I've tried this and my gecko still hasn't eaten in 2 months..so it doesn't work on every gecko. But good suggestion.
