How to Make Safe, Non-Toxic, & Decorative Humid Hides

After spending awhile in the craft store I found the perfect tools to make great looking humid hides that are safe with no harmful fumes.

Tools used: Ziploc Plastic Containers (small round, medium square), 4 oz. of Mod Podge (a Non-Toxic sealer, glue, and finish), 1 1/2 inch brush, 1 pound of deco-sand, & a Sharp Bladed Box Cutter. This is more than enough to make at least 5 medium sized humid hides.

Mod-Podge is the greatest, it seals and glues leaving a wonderful finish. Make sure to purchase the Matte Mod Podge because if you get the high gloss the sand won't look as natural.

Here's the finished product. The round plastic hide needs a final top coat of mod-podge to seal it.

Wow, that's really neat! Very aesthetically pleasing! How long did that take you?

Thank you. Well it takes awhile to dry, but for the initial process of cutting the hole and waiting for the layers of sand to dry in between, I'd say about an hour per hide. I usually apply 2-3 layers of sand and let it dry overnight. The next day I put on a final coat of mod-podge to seal them, and then wait an additional 24 hours to dry until putting them to use.

Thanks Jenn & John. I'm really happy with the way they turned out.
Kalea seems to enjoy the humid hides with the holes at the top. Here she is just chillin, she loves it so much she rarely ever uses her other hides.
My leos are "rollin' like celebrities". :D

WOW. Thats what I imagined my humid hide to be, but I thought of using glue some how and rolling it in sand.

Are you willing to sell one? Because those are too nice..

Nice. I might try this. I uses rock paint like I use to with my tortoises. But with that it has to air out for like a week.

GeeEss that looks really nice!

Liz, I'm actually going to start up a website to sell them in the next coming weeks if you're interested in purchasing one.

Looks nice. Modge Podge is a great medium to play with! For people with young kids this is an easy project with huge benefits of "I made that & my gecko loves it!"

Lani, good luck with the sales.

I was wondering that too. Is the Mod-podge flexible enough not to crack when you take the lids off for cleaning?
