Humid Hide Vs. Spraying, etc.

I have humid hide issues. It doesn't stay wet, takes up lots of space, and my geckos NEVER use it. I was wondering if misting the tank, and bathing if they need the extra help would be an acceptable alternative. I haven't had a humid hide in my tank (for above reasons) and my geckos have been fine.

Is this OK, or not?'

Thanks,

You need to check your humidity hides every day to make sure they stay moiste. I also spray inside the tank during warm days.

The humidity hises are to help your geckos when they shed. It helps keep them from losing fingers, ect during the shedding proscess. You should put the humid hide back in.

I simply spray my gecko down each day and more than once while they are shedding. My humid hide has pretty much became a regular hide due to the fact that it is impossible to keep moist. Summer time in the south however is very humid. I havent had a problem yet.

My geckos freak out if I spray them...I think its better to keep a moist hide in there even though you don't see them use it often. I don't think it matters too much if its dried for a couple days, just make sure they are moist when your geckos are about to shed.

I switched to bed a beast in the moist hide. It stays moist longer and my geckos seem to use the hides more. Since the switch I havent had issues with any of them not using a hide.

i had the same problem, none of my geckos used the humid hide so i removed them. i dont spray either. what i do is regularly check my geckos and if they have an incomplete shed i remove it, only one of my 5 ever has a problem and it is on his toes so i gently rub it off and i actually enjoy helping him out.

Weird, because my geckos won't come out of their humid hides. They love them.

I use sphagnum moss in my humid hides and it works fine. When I soaked the moss brick to undo it, it stayed moist for WEEKS.

My geckos hate their moist hide, I've tried paper towel and moss and they refuse to go in. I just watch them carefully when they're going to shed, give them a soak, and help out one with her toes when she needs it.

I know how important humid hides are, but mine never use them, and shed just fine besides their toes, and only 1 of them really has a problem with that. I would personally rather spray them/their cage (they don't seem to pleased about that), and bath them if they have any problems. I just wasn't sure if anyone else was doing it like that. If I ever experience any real problems, I would of course supply a humid hide.

I would persist with the moist hide if possible - is it a home made one or one you've bought? My three all have moist hides and all love them, although 2 only use them for the couple days before and during shedding but I have not had a single problem with shedding, it also helps as because I have 2 housed together they obviously don't shed at the same time and it means the humidity level does not get too high for the one that is not shedding (which happens when misting). Hope that helps :)

Vermiculite is in our humid hides. We mist them every once in a while, but mostly only when we see one shedding. We care for our geckos every single night, so we see them when they are about to shed and give their hides a good soak down

About moist hides: Do any pet stores (PetSmart, Petcetera, etc.) sell good moist hides? Right now I only have a regular hut (hollow out half-cut cocnute shell) for my little gecko.
I've had him for about a week and I notice he's starting to enter his shedding period, I think, as his skin is becoming more gray and "dry" than it has been before. So I want to pay a visit tomorrow to pet stores in-town and see if I can get him a moist hide to use. Now, should I have one moist hide and one regular hide in the warm area under the heating pad, and place another moist hide in the cooler area as well? I really want to make sure he stays comfortable and healthy during his shedding process.

:main_yes: that's what I use as well and mine love their moist hides (recycled plastic chinese take-a-away boxes) from hatchlings to adults :D Not had any probs with moist hides drying out (check them regular) I keep the moist hides in all the time and no probs either with leo's shedding :main_thumbsup:
