Christine, I am glad you are ok.

Having been an arborist for 25 years on and off(mostly on), I can tell you why most of those trees fell. This time of year the trees have a full crown of leaves and act like a sale. Pruning mature trees such as those of secondary grown and over extending limbs is a wise choice so air flows through them and they are actually more healthy too.

The maple? that's a tall stump with the tree next to it is a prime example of what I speak of. The uprooted tree came down due to that and the ground being saturated and the soil being loosened more easily as the tree sways with the wind.

While it's good money for me when trees fall in storms, I would much rather see a mature tree standing and pruned, than get twice my hourly rate from the insurance company to remove it from a house.

I took a 110 foot oak off a house thursday and it was sad to see that tree missing from a road I travel daily on friday:main_thumbsdown: Thankfully the house was built well and the tree didn't fall far, so minimal damage to the roof was found apon removing that tree:main_thumbsup:
