i bought 1000 crickets, and every time i open up the top of the tub, i feel like i am going to pass out. the smell is horrific, it stinks up my whole house. and they make so much noise throughout the day. the bad part is they are so expensive at the stores, so i decided to buy in bulk, but they are just too horrible to keep in mass. is there a solution to this? my geckos love crickets the best, but i just cant keep them.

Put on a gas mask, wear vinyl gloves, and keep their container cleaned daily... including their food and water. If you don't your geckos are subject to bacterial infections.

Buy 3/4" crickets which are too small to make noise. I keep mine in a 10 gallon tank and sift out the dead ones every couple of days.

3/4" are dang near adults, they make noise

buy 3/8"

don't put the lid on
give them mainly dry gutload
only enough moisture for an hour or so 2 times a day

gas mask ect as Marcia mentioned lol

they can me managed, putting a lid on anything with moisture in it just componds the stink, put a slice tomatoe in a jar for 2 days and you get fungus and yuck and often even flies in that small amount of time.

plenty of air will help remedy that problem and enough but not too much moisture (hard to balance)

I tried breeding my own crickets when we first got gecko's and my family made me move them into the garage. Lol :main_rolleyes: Nasty loud little buggers. I'm glad that my geck's prefer worms now.
They only have crickets as an occasional treat.

Most of our geckos are fed on crickets exclusively and now we are shifting to mealies because crickets are getting very expensive.
If you take all the dead crickets out every day, clean their tub, be sure their food and drinks are fresh and dont put too many together with enough hiding/climbing things in the tub you'll be allright.
The noise is something you dont hear anymore after a couple of weeks though.
It's the same thing as a train that runs by 10 times a day, most people get used to that aswell :)

Thats what I do. I use to buy 500 at a time but i would lose more of them then it was worth. When I went to a breeding rack I went to worms. and every one switched just as fast as i went from tanks to tubs. And they are so much fatter now then before. I feel crix just aren't worth it@!

My daughter had bought a box of 500 crickets at a reptile show (for her 2 beardies).
Well, the cat found the box...
Consequently, we played "Cricket Round-up" for 2 days. Still didn't find all the little buggers...
Nasty little creatures, aren't they?

Yea we had to order 2000 crickets every week for the Bearded dragons and Frilled Dragons, and then we decided the heck with it, so we sold the 13 beardies and the 11 frilled dragons, and stoped getting those nasty crickets!!!!!!! The beardies ate SuperWorms and Crickets and the Frilled Dragons only ate crickets.

I feed crickets as the main source of food. I used to hate crickets also but since some of my geckos did not like meal worms I went back to feeding crickets again. I found that just keeping the bins clean all the time really helps with keeping the smell down. Also I gutload with Progutload from cody's which is hassle free and so much easier (no mess & no smells).

i like roaches, but they are so expensive, and breeding takes to long. is there a good place to get a bunch of good healthy superworms for a cheap price?

My husband decided to order some crickets from a local pet store in bulk for our beardies. They finally came in a couple days ago and half were dead. The remainder are large, stinky and noisy. He had good intentions, but I have told him time and again that I will NOT deal with mass quantities of crickets (I breed our mealies now, so we're saving major $$$). Crickets are just not worth the hassle in my opinion. I want to do maintenance on the critters I love and enjoy, not smelly feeders.
