i've been feeding Yuuki crickets and meal worms, but she is totally incapable of catching the crickets herself, so i have to catch them and offer them to her with tongs, but. . . i am also nearly incapable of catching them! :p it's hard to catch them with the tongs without crushing them! actually, i accidentally ripped off the two big jumping legs on one cricket, and then Yuuki was able to catch it herself :main_thumbsup:

stoopid crickets.

We do not like to use crickets at all. Not only are they a pain to use, they stink, get loose in the house, and can harbor pathogenic organisms. If you must use them, take off the jumping legs and one foreleg and place them in a dish for easy eating access.
We try to have all our leos on mealies....it can take time and patience when you get a leo from a breeder that feeds crickets, but eventually you can wean them off crickets.

We like to vary the diet with other things, like butterworms and superworms. Silkies are great too. Remember, Ron Tremper and Garrick DeMeyer feed mealies excusively with obvious great success.
To each his own, but healthy, gutloaded mealies are our preference.

Well that is really cool to know.
I feed crickets and mealies because I like the variety in the diet. They each have different nutrition value that I believe brings in a very balanced diet. But, like Ray said people are obviously feeding other variations with great success, so i dont see why you couldnt try that. Good luck

yeah, this is good info. i've used up the batch of crickets i had initially bought, and i don't think i'm going to buy any more. i'll keep feeding the mealworms as a staple and add some other kinds of worms for variety. next step: get a transparent meal worm bowl so yuuki can figure out how to get them herself!

i usually grab the end of the abdomen of the cricket seeing that the jumper legs can easily be pulled off by force of the struggling cricket in the tweezers. sometimes the prongs on the rear are a good way to pick them up and hold them but honestly i prefer super worms over crickets as feeders. one of my geckos in particular would only eat crickets until i started with the smallest super worms and gradually fed her larger ones over time.

Sounds terrible but i break their legs so they sort of "limp" but i vary the diet between the crickets (exercise) and mealies
