Some animals are lazy, and some like to be more active and come out to see what's going on or ask for attention.

My cats are about as active as each of my geckos... in fact I'm not uncertain if there isn't some kind of body swapping going on, they mirror each other so well. One is more active, the other is more content to lounge around.

Mine usually do stay in during the day, but at night they are almost always out wondering around. :)

Kind of like saying a ball python is boring because it is always in a ball, or a turtle is boring because it is always in its shell....... lol! Leopard geckos are typically nocturnal so they are most active at night. It could also have a lot to do with your setup. If the gecko does not feel secure anywhere else in its enclosure other than its hide, that is where it will stay. I have dozens of leos and a vast majority of them come out and are very active at all times of the day and night.

Mine don't even come out at night anymore really, its crazy! Today I actually bought one of those plastic pools you get from Walmart and made a little play pen for them so they could get some exercise. They seem to like it and were actually really active running around and exploring. I filled the bottom of it with sand and put some hides, rocks, and things to climb on in there for them. Its a pretty big pool so they have a lot of room to run around and stuff. I had them in there for about thirty minutes and then put them back in their tank. They seemed to really like it though so I think I'll continue to do it. Its nice to see them being active.

Other than being oddities, 95% of exotic or non-domesticated pets are actually boring if you think of it in different views and aspects. If you find a particular animal boring after some time then it means they're not for you. That's the prime reason i keep a lot of animals, for variety. Never bores me :)

They definitely are not as active or interactive as dogs and cats or other fuzzy and feathered animals but that's one reason I love them! They may be more "boring" but that also means they don't require care and attention every single day. In general, they sleep unless they are hungry or stressed out. If yours are obese they may be more boring than they should be. If they are adults I would try feeding them every 3-5 days and you may find they are more active in between feedings or after they lose a bit of weight.

I have one gecko that is always doing something. He was my first and he acts like a dog sometimes. He will actually investigate if you go in my gecko room. If you put your hand in his tank he will walk over and put his head in your hand. Look at you than crawl in your hand he is so adorable.:D

That's why I have chameleons too ;) They're awake during the day and are a lot more interesting to interact with during the day. The geckos end up being my "for fun" display tank pets, who never require very much from me. They definitely aren't super exciting, but mine do come out and wander at night and they're cute to hold for a little while.

But I do like that the geckos are mellow, low-maintenance, and nearly indestructible - I may have to take a chameleon to the vet once at year or so to treat something despite excellent husbandry, but I haven't had to get a gecko treated for anything in a good 4-5 years.
