So I am adopting a little gecko from a pet store after someone returned it with a broken leg. How Horrible right?! Well they took it to the vet and the gecko lost its back leg from the knee down. It moves around fine, eats well and is very active. I haven't gotten the baby yet, but I got to see him/her today. The gecko is very feisty! If you go near it is clicks and chirps and tries to bite you. I feel so bad for this little one and want to know how I can get it to calm down and get used to humans. I have 3 other geckos, handled many others, and I have never seen one so aggressive! I need some tips in calming this one down. He/she has dropped part of the tail or something happened to it before the people brought the gecko back. It is growing back but I don't want to risk the tail dropping again. It isn't very old maybe 2 months or so. Please help me, I know I can take care of it fine but I don't always want it to be afraid of me. I hope someone can help me out.

It's normal for babies to scream and try to look threatening and it sounds as if this one has been through a lot and is even more traumatized. I would imagine the first thing to do is to set it up in such a way that you don't need to disturb it much. Talk to it frequently when you go by so it gets used to the sound of your voice. When you have to put your hands in there to feed and water it, talk to it and try to stay calm when it gets all freaked out (it's hard, because their screams easily set us off). After it's had awhile to settle in and seems to be eating, maybe you can get to a point where you can put your hand in and get it closer. When it finally seems the right time to try and pick it up, make a cave with your hand and let it sit in there. It may spend months not coming out of the hide which is normal for many babies. I have had some squirmy geckos who have chilled out completely and some that didn't really and just barely tolerate me.

Good luck
