I *think* my leos are basking

I've read the many threads on this forum debating whether leos bask or not. Well I don't know for sure because I've never observed leos in the wild and I have not conducted any experiments at home. But I keep thinking that it is probable that leos do bask in the wild, perhaps during the dusk and dawn.

When I got home about 30 minutes ago (it was 18:00) I caught both of my leos out of their hides (they live in separated terrariums), just laying on the paper-towel doing nothing. They were like 2 inches away from their dry hides. The temperature of their hides and where they laid are the same. The only difference I can think of is light. They do get indirect sunlight outside of their hides.

Could they really be basking? Until I learn to communicate with them, I cannot say for sure. Just wanna share with y'all :)

It might be a little cooler outside the hide just because it isn't an enclosed space. But it is odd they both did it at the same time. Maybe they thought it was spring break. lol

I know mine does that because it's warmer in her hide than on the ground just outside it. I'm assuming that since the air circulates better inside the warm hide it gets hotter (Ive taken temps in there, it's definitely warmer) and she finds it uncomfortable. Interestingly, she only rests outside her warm hide when I have paper towel substrate. When I use repticarpet, she goes into her hide. The paper towel is thinner so the ground is hotter, and it bugs her. That's why I switched to carpet in the first place.

Well by definition to bask is to lie or be exposed to warmth or heat, therefore lying on an UTH would still be considered basking. I guess we all just associate basking with the sunlight when its really about the heat.

It is also about the sunlight... Reptiles aquire vitamin D from the sun... This includes ALL nocturnal species...
