Ok...so I'm considering getting my second leopard gecko :D ! I just purchased my first one, oh, about a month ago...and I love him (or her)! Jiggy, that's his name, is a normal and I bought him from petsmart. It cost me about $200 to buy him, his cage, accessories, and whatever else. Well, that honestly kinda broke me for a while :p , considering that I only have a part-time job while school is in, though luckily my fiancee helped me with the costs.

Anyway, to get on with what I was saying...I really want another, possibly an older one if I can (can anyone help me out here?). I'm just wanting to know what is the best way to make buying another cage, heating, and accessories cheaper? I know I will probably end up spending about $100 on the gecko so I want to make everything else a little cheaper.

Anyone have any product ideas?
(Sorry for the long post, I tend to ramble :p )

Well maybe you could buy used items or look for sales. I just bought a few bulbs and stuff on ebay and saved bundle. You could have bought a cage at petco's $1 per gallon sale but its too late now :(

See if you can find a breeder that just got started near you (of course it may be a little bit of a drive for you considering where you are!! ;)) Anyway, someone who has just switched to rack systems is going to have a lot of extra tanks lying around for cheap, that's how Phil and I got rid of our old stuff! Or check your classifieds section on a website or your local newspaper. Good luck!!

Here are some other ideas: keep checking craigslist or ebay for affordable tanks, preferably a 20 long if you want to eventually keep 2 geckos together. If you find a 20 long soon you can house the new one in there during quarantine. You can also get a plastic large faunarium or critter keeper. The largest ones are about 12" x 17" x 6" tall. I have kept 3 juveniles in there without any problem. They are cheaper than glass aquariums. You can often get heat pads for less money on ebay. Those are your biggest expenses. You may want to try fish people as well as reptile people in your search for a tank. Good luck. I would sell you all this for a good price if you lived closer, but shipping would be way too much.

Darn! Why do I have to live so far away from all you people with geckos :p ! LoL. I would like to eventually keep both my geckos together if I was to get another juvenile, but I don't know whether mine is a female or not. If he/she is then I would definitely look to get another female and then eventually keep them both together...that would save me some space!

Can someone remind me how you can tell whether one is a male or female? I always get them mixed up. I just think I'd have a problem trying to pick my little one up, he's very squirmy, I've only been able to hold him, but never by picking him up. I'm always scared I'll hurt him or stress him out too much.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas...I'll be checking out eBay and some classifieds!

Well the easiest way to tell is the male has preanal pores at the base of the tail. Here's a good website with pics.

But- why were you thinking you were going to spend $100 on a gecko? I've spent like average >$5 a gecko. Granted, most were from friends and thus free- but still I got Zat, a pretty sweet looking albino, for like $30. I would suggest you buy your next leo at a herp fair. Not only will you have cheaper prices on caging and supplies there, but usually they are much cheaper on geckos, too. I've seen gecko juvies going for $5 (they didn't look particularly healthy, but there you go). Sometimes there are ones there for adoption, too, that are even cheaper and you can feel good about it as they had a productive life and you're giving them 'retirement'. Also scope out Craigslist- sometimes there are whole leo set-ups for like $10, sometimes even with the leo.

I would steer clear of petsotres- most of thier animals are somewhat unhealthy and certainly more expensive.

Now- if you are going to get a gecko and figure if that's the case then why not go for a gorgeous enigma (or something- that's my personal envy gecko atm) then sure, $100 is reasonable for a pet-quality. But you can still get the supplies cheaper at a yard-sale or Craigslist sort of deal.

Well, I know I could get another gecko like mine for pretty cheap. I just have my eye on one or two that cost about $50-60, but I have to order them, and the shipping is $50 in and of itself. That's where I got that $100 estimate from...because I'm planning on ordering one. And because of that I want to try and get supplies as cheap as I can so that I won't have to come up with a bunch of money to get another gecko set up.

I looked on craigslist and didn't find anything. Then I looked on eBay and found a few things, but nothing really cheap, so I'm just going to continue looking and hope I can find a good deal :) !

Does anyone on here by any chance have any used supplies that aren't needed anymore...anything? I don't expect to order a tank...I'll just have to hope to find a cheap one of those.

Anyway...thanks for the help guys!

Do you have any reptile shows near you? That would save you the shipping cost.

I buy all of our UTH/Rheostats on E-bay. The 20-30 gallon UTH is around $40 at a store, but on E-bay it is shipped for $15-18. Same with Rheostats.

Good luck on your "bargain hunting" :main_thumbsup:

another gecko

Glass aquariums are only about $9 at Wal-Mart and the lids are about $6. Sometimes its better to just buy that stuff new then spend the day and gas driving to yard sales looking or it.

Just my opinion though.
