Before anyone else says it, I would like to recommend that you get rid of the sand.
I had 3 female leopard geckos on similarly colored sand, and they started eating it. I have heard of a lot of geckos dying from impaction (too much sand in the digestive tract).
I know it doesn't look as cool, but you would much rather see them safe on newspaper, paper towel, or repti carpet, than to see them eat sand and die from it.

Very pretty geckos though.

First of all welcome to GF :)

The sand issue is a personal choice...if you're comfortable with it and your husbandry, and it's working for you, then don't worry about it!

The only thing I would be concerned with is if they are anything other than 2 females, as trouble will soon arise with any other combination.

They look healthy though, and once again, welcome to GF :)

They are both girls.
And If ive had them for a YEAR, i dont think theyre going to start eating the sand now.

They enjoy digging in the sand, If I took it away from them they wouldnt have anything to do.

i think they will be ok... there is sand in the desert, ive had them in it over a year perfectly healthy

Just figured I’d let you know leopard geckos aren’t native to a desert like the Sahara where all it is, is sand dunes. They’re from Pakistan where it’s mostly hard packed clay soil with rocks. I just always wonder why people insist on putting their geckos in harms way even when somebody takes the time to properly educate them. But, it’s whatever, no more reason to beat a dead horse, just figured I’d tell you about the desert they come from.

First off, welcome! Lovely geckos you have there.

Don't mean to jump on you, but just something to consider:

Yes, I'm sure they've been fine. Animals are always "fine" up until something goes noticeably wrong. I'd still be concerned about chronic impaction. Basically overtime, they can ingest a little bit here and there, and while they may seem fine for a long time, eventually it can build up and cause problems. Why risk it?

They may enjoy digging in the sand, and if you took it away from them they wouldn't be able to dig anymore BUT you can still give them other things to do. Try building ledges and caves that they can explore and climb on instead, for example.

yeah another sand debate.....not

I just love how people who are new to leos think that they no more than the people who breed and supply the leopard geckos. These people are the ones who breed the new color morphs, who have been doing this for years, yet your short time owning a leo clearly means that you no more. Whatever, im over these debates. :argue::rolleyes::wall:

:furious3: OK, lets TRY to keep it professional folks! Because let's face it, you can recommend all you want what substrate Evan should use. But at the end of the day, it's Evan's decission which one he chooses to keep his animals on. OK, now I'm hoppin' of my soap box. ;)

Evan, Welcome to GeckoForums.net. :main_yes:

Actually they live on compacted clay in their natural habitat, not sand

Nobody is criticizing, we are all just freaks about taking care of the geckos perfectly. It could cause a problem but we are just trying to help you.
