I'm really torn on whether to trade my crested or not, now hold on I don't take a liking to this one bit, I love him but here the deal.

1. I can't keep the humdity up
yes there is a garbage bag over it
Yes Iist twice a day but still 50
So I added a heating pad, success temporary
Now all he does is lye on the heating pad which I happen to know gets to 95•
That is bad
If it's anyless the water won't evaporte, and his cage molds up. In like one day!!
He is always dark
I can't get him to eat sandfire CGD
He only likes crickets, I have my own mealworms, which I had would stop the cricket buying ( because they are so exspensive) he has a hard time catching them in his cage
So I try feeding him outside his cage, won't eat so the crickets hide and die and I don't know how many he really ate

I feel like a terrible owner to him, I want him to be happy and I think I just don't have the resources right now to take care of him because my mom doesn't want me to spend anymore money on him

Like for an exo-terra and a fogger and a nice shipment of crickets, nope not allowed, especially since the cage is 90, the fogger is 50 and crickets can " escape" and stink as my mom puts it.
Anways I can't even see him, what should I do, say goodbye to my baby and stick with my simple leos or find someway to fix my delima

I'm so torn, I want him, but I want him well taken care of..... :(

in my oppinion,

i know you love your annimal but if you can not take care of him/her accordingly due to real live issues then my advice would be , sell or give it away do not let the annimal suffer for the owners shortcoms even though you love him to bids.

I agree tenfold and I've done all I can in my power to proparly care for him, but my parents won't let me spend that money on those items, it's not that I couldn't. Let it be known though that I tried a lot things and cared for him to the best of my ability. He even has special liquid vitamins and a drip system and lots of plants and a grapevine and a background and a special food bowl, and I cared for him when he didn't shed completely and I did care for him but I'm just worried because he is so dark and other reasons

Wow. This may sound mean, but this post actually made my day a little bit better.

Not because of your problem or because you're considering giving up your gecko, but because it proves that there are responsible people in the world who know when they just don't have the resources to care for an animal and put its well-being before their personal preferences. I agree, if it's really difficult to care for the little guy I'd find a better home for him. That way you know he'll be happy. I wish you all the best, and I'm glad that you're being so mature about this. Plenty of people would keep a gecko to the point where it will get sick and possibly die because it's 'their pet' and 'it's fine, really.'

I agree. Your dad and mom seem to have conflicting thoughts of the matter, so use one against the other. If they are reasonable people, they will either buy you equipment or allow you to sell it, or maybe come up with another solution.

I bought my leopard gecko in mid-December, the coldest day of the year. She was fine. Just keep him close to your body and he'll be alright. It's not like you're walking to the expo.

How big is the gecko and do you have a picture of him?

For the humidity, toss out the humidity reader thing, most of them are junk anyway. You can judge it by the substrate and by his shed. If he sheds normally then it is fine. You also want the substrate to dry out at some point during the day or mold will grow. They dont need a constant high humidity, my breeders cages are completely dry for half of the day. One good misting every night before you go to bed should be fine.

As for being dark, that is called fired up and can be from having high humidity. When they are moist their colors usually get darker.
The heat pad, you can tape it on the back side of the aquarium and not on the bottom. That will keep it from getting so hot.

And the feeding. On the crested forums I am on, just about every new owner posts that their gecko is not eating cgd, but 99% of the time they are. Most cresteds do not eat a lot of food each meal. Unless he is fully grown you shouldnt expect to see any food missing and if you do, it will be hardly noticable. I have never seen any of my baby or juvie cresteds eat or see any food missing since I have been breeding and they always grow.

If you want something different to keep him in you can go to Walmart and get a 66 qt plastic tub and drill holes in the top. You can get them for $10 or less.

I dont see any reason to give him up. Everything sounds ok. Unless he is super thin and behind the eyes are sunken in then it also sounds like he is eating too. But a picture would help to see how well he is eating.

I went to the show and great news the guy there told me just about everything your telling me now!!, So i removed the garbage bag, and didn't spray all day today and he's lightened up and his toes were not sticking up because of the humidity being to high, dumb books told me to keep the humidity up to 90%..grrr. I am so happy!! I bought him crickets today XD

But I'll post pictures soon, but he does seem skinny, I can faintly see his spine and his eyes aren't as BULGEY as like most cresteds I see. but I didn't want to get rid of him, I just didn't want to kill him :(

Most books are outdated now and their care sheets are not the best. The Pangea forums is probably the best place to get info. It's like these forums only for cresteds instead of leos.:) You can see the spine on some cresteds even when they are healthy. If it's not healthy it will look really bad and easy to notice. You can see his bones everywhere and the tail will be thin also.

Aww, he's so cute! He looks great too! Kudos for being so concerned about him and being willing to give him away to a new home. That shows a level of maturity that is quite frankly lacking in this world. But, seems to me that you take great care of the guy despite your worries, and I'm glad you were able to talk to somebody at that show.

Also, Eric has the right of it. The Pangaea forums are really helpful for crested gecko owners. You should go visit. ;-)
