I'm taking Eba back...

There is NO WAY I'm letting Eba go through this again. She's having the screaming & spasms again tonight. I can't get her to eat. I had accepted the vet's explanation with great hopes. But I can't watch her writhe in what looks like excruciating pain each night. I wish there was a pain killer for her.

Gabe will be going with me in the morning so I'm betting the pet store is going to get one mean 6 year old curse put on it. You won't see me buy another gecko from a pet store.

OMG, that is horrible! The poor little Gecko. I may have missed the thread about this, what did the vet say was wrong with her?

The vet thinks it's a bacterial infection. I used to have a 175lb great dane with epilepsy & this little guy's fits were actually worse than the dane's. I hope to god that they put the poor thing down. PetCo said they'll have their vet look at it. I gave them the medicine, all the information on the care I've given Eba (housing to eating) & my vet's number in case they wanted to talk to him. If there's a miracle cure, that's what this poor bugger needs. I hope to never experience anything like that again.

Gabe is a bit upset. But he knows April is only 2 months away. Now to sanitize Eba's home & store it until then.

Once again thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Jeanine, I am sorry to hear that. Unfortnately, that seems like a risk we need to take when buying from petstores. I just hope they can help him or end his suffering. At least you will have a healthy one coming into the family soon.

And the sad this is, that is what they will do, when I first got into reptiles, before I knew any better, I used to be a petco employee. I actully got fired because I got into an arguement with the GM of the store because she would not have the store vet take a look at a sickly iguana that we had gotten in. Its rediculous, I cant speak for every Petco, but the one that I worked at, the GM would rather just freeze a sick animal than have it get a vet exam. I hate petcos ethics with a passion.

That's (the freezer story) an ugly lesson learned for me. Though I honestly was wondering if putting it down last night was the answer.

doing the most to help it was the answer. sometimes we have to do thinks that might disturb us (the spazzing fits) to help make our geckos better. not just return them because you cant handle it

The thing about the vets at PetCo, as I understand it, is they are not PetCo employees. They work for a company that contracts with PetCo. If PetCo wants an animal /reptile looked at by these vets they have to pay for the service. For this reason I don't believe this poor gecko will be looked at by a vet while in their care. Not to mention the extra time that aPetCo employee would have to take to care for the gecko.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if that gecko ended up in the freezer.

I'm sorry you had to go through this, but I also feel you should have toughed it out and done everything you could for the gecko.

I'm sorry that some of you are angry or disappointed with my decision. I cared for an epileptic great dane for 3 years before the epilepsy took him from me. After seeing Jerry's struggle, I vowed to never make an animal suffer like that again. I sat before Eba wishing her better...or even to pass so that she wouldn't be screaming & writhing in pain. She'd pass out. I'd think she was dead. I'd tell my 6 year old that I was sorry & later she'd flinch. The cycle would start again. I'm sorry that I failed Eba & my son, but my decision was made from my heart. Hopefully, I'm still welcome here. J

you are always welcome here
just the thing is. animals get sick and we may not like something about treating them or whatever we must and still do care for them, even if they do end up dying.n reptiles and mammals are much different.
also i would like to tell you a little story.
we had a dog a couple years ago diagnosed with canine lupis which is not curable and fatal. from the initial onset they generally live 6 months to max. we knew pickles would be dead in 6 months or less. but we wanted to give her the best life we could until it was her time. she was on kemo and steroids for many months one days her nose began to bleed. we knew her platelet count was super low too low for clotting. she was hemorrhaging and knew there was nothing to do. we couldnt stop the bleeding, not enough platelets to clot. so we took her in. knowing an animal is going to die no matter what you do is the hardest thing. like i said we knew she would be dead in max 6 months but we still tried and did what we could do to make her comfortable in the mean time.. during those six months there were time we wondered should we put her down now?
i mean because we knew she was going to die soon. and her platelet count was very low. some days she had good days other days not so good.
i guess what i am trying to say is dont just give up, give them a chance
here is pickles a month or so before we had to have her put down
