I don't much care for candles.. But every now and then I like to freshen up my room by burning incense. My mother tells me it makes my room smell suspicious.. But I just can't get enough of it! As I lit up my favorite brand, Satya Super Hit... A thought crossed my mind. I can't believe I didn't think of it before!

Is it safe to burn incense around reptiles? Could it be dangerous to their health? I keep all of my reptiles here in my room..

I burn it on the far side of my room away from them, but the scent carries throughout the entire house.

I've thought about the same thing Lena, I HATE incense (makes me sneeze no matter what, and so many years of selling Nag Champa at the convenience store...ugh) but I am constantly burning candles in the house. I REALLY try not to burn them in the reptile room, and instead will be putting orange peels in the mealworm bins to try and freshen it up in there, as it DOES worry me. I think ANY strong smell could potentially be harmful to them.

I light incense on occasion too, and it doesn't seem like it would be a problem, just be sure to burn it away from the tanks you have you reptiles in. Even though the scent may dissipate too quickly good ventilation especially around the tanks makes a huge difference. Otherwise its just like another scent that wafts around their area similar to a perfume sprayed once and far from the tanks or even the smell of dinner cooking in the oven.

I don't burn incense because it chokes me up for some reason but I'm always worried about spraying air freshener and perfume. I wish someone knew more. I havn't had any issues so far but I'm very careful at the same time because I don't want to learn the hard way.

I wish I had the answer to this too... I always put my perfume on in my room and occasionally spray air freshener. I make it a point of course to do it on the opposite end of the room from my tanks.

We don't use incense but we do use Glade plug-ins around the reptiles and febreez since it's pet safe. I also put dryer sheets around the reptile room to make it smell better.

Heres what little bit I know, not about reptiles, but about other animals. In the bird world, candles that have lead in the wicks or those glade scented oil candels are a no no as the lead is toxic and can kill them withing a couple hours. I also know that any cookware with teflon is a no no as when it reaches a high temp it can let off poision fumes for them. They say Febreeze is Ok for pet, but there are alot of boards about dogs getting sick or dying from it being sprayed nearby or on thier bedding, glade plug in and such I have herd are also not good becuase thier sometimes strong depending on the scent. I do use a squirt of no vaccum foam and glade air freshener without any issues, but you never know.

I dont know if these are true or rumors or a mix of both. I also don't know if it applies to reptiles, but i thought I would share alittle bit I know about toher animals to make you all aware of problems other have had with other animals.

What I heard is, the teflon cookware thing is not just a bird hazard, but
other small animals are effected as well (even geckos?).
But my understanding is that you actually have to "burn" the cookware
with high flame to emit the toxic fumes. Also as the cookware item ages,
it will no longer emit the fumes. Dont know how much of that is fact or
fiction :D

What I know is that reptiles do have very sensitive lungs, so you should not smoke around them. I burn incense to no ill effect, just do not burn it right next to the tanks and you should be fine.
