How often should you change the vermiculite in the incubator? I have lots of eggs in mine so it would be awkward changing it every time a clutch hatched?
Well if you have the incubation medium in a container then it needs to be changed once the eggs have hatched.
If your putting the incubation medium right in the incubator then you might wanna think about changing that. Once the eggs hatch then the yoke and liquids inside will leak out into the incubation medium and cause mold and bacteria to start growing and possibly put your other eggs at harm. Not saying to will happen but its a possibility.
I would use a deli cup for each clutch whether they are 1 or 2 eggs. Keeps everything seperated so you know for sure which eggs will hatch soon or later. Also if a gecko hatches then it won't disturb any of the other eggs that are in the container besides the one that its with if you had 2 eggs in the clutch.
Bacteria will grow from whats leaked out after the eggs hatches. If you have several clutches that are layed at differant times then some will hatch sooner then others. Those eggs that still need to be incubated longer will be sitting in what was left over from the others hatching.
Plus if something goes wrong in the tub, such as a low humidity, then only 1 or 2 eggs will be affected and not several.
Well i use a hovabator and i put a thermometer probe inside one of the containers that I use for the eggs. Just put a small hole in the top or side and put the probe in thru the hole and tape around it so the container is still air tight.
In theory yes but it depends on how insulated your incubator is. If the incubator can't keep the temps stable then some containers may be a degree or so off.
