Incubation without Incubator

Hello everyone,

Did any of my fellow forum members managed to successfully hatch leopard geckos without an incubator in a setup like laying the eggs inside a deli cup or tupperware with adequate moistened incubation medium and placing it inside the terrarium around the heating mat location? Can this be a successful practice?

Best,
Josh

Hi Josh, I have never attempted this practice, although I imagine if your heat mat is well controlled by a thermostat, it might be an option.

The only thing I would worry about is the animal in the enclosure knocking over the deli cup the eggs are in. My geckos love to spill everything over. I suppose it could work if you had a separate tank or enclosure for the eggs to be in.

I built the most basic incubator you could imagine out of a styrofoam cooler and a night light bulb. It cost me less than $10.00 to make and it gets the job done. You just have to play around with it a bit to get the correct temp. I've posted pictures of it in a couple of places on this forum. Bob

I have hatched leos just by putting the eggs in a container with no holes and moist vermiculite and putting it against the back wall of one of my racks and just keeping an eye on the temps, all of my fertile eggs hatched...
