I have been using this now for several weeks:

http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Infrared-Thermometer/2888291/product.html?

It's not much money, and it works GREAT!!
It's sooooo fast and easy to take accurate temp readings from several inches
away. I even take reading inside the humid hide w/o lifting the lid.

I just love this new toy!! and running around the house taking temps of stuff I cant even reach!! :main_laugh:

Does anyone else use one and like it???

We just got finished testing 4 major brands of UTH's with my infrared thermometer.
Here are the models we tested, and they are all medium size (about 11 X 20''):

ZooMed
T-Rex Cobra
Dragon's Lair (Big Apple Herps)
Ultratherm (The Bean Farm)

We checked each for hot spots and took our readings in 9 diferent spots.
The mats where alowed to heat up unregulated for 2 hours.

The ZooMed had spots from 82 to 126F. What was interesting was that the hottest spot on this mat was not in the middle, like you might suspect, but in the upper right corner!

The T-Rex was the "coldest" one of the bunch, with the hottest at 95 and the coolest at 81F. The warmest spot on this mat WAS in the middle of the panel.

Both the Dragon's Lair, and Ultratherm where about the same.
Like the ZooMed, the warmest spots where always slightly off center, but not in the corner like the ZooMed. The range was 88 to 110F!

Of course, this was only an "quick and dirty" experiment, and doesnt mean other same models will perform exactly the same. It's not exactly scientific, since we only tested one of each model. But it was still kind of interesting and fun to do if your a nerd like me!! ;)

When you have over 100 cages, you can't live without one of those things! :D Mine is about 3" long and half an inch in diameter, and I haven't had to replace the batteries in almost 3 years. If I ever accidently lose a finger, I'm going to have it replaced with a tempgun :D They rule!!!
